MORE PICNIC DISHES
By PAUL G. WEILLER
In most radio frequency circuits In
use at present the tuning Is done by
varying tjie"capacity, in parallel with
a coll, by a vurlnble condenser. This
method Is Ideal from a manufacturing
standpoint. The variable condenser of
today Is u pretty good piece of ap
paratus, In spite of being culled a mon
strosity by some writers. Straight
colls are easy to wind and can be made
with accuracy i
If the tuning Is done by varying in-
thiotnncos, the variometer p» practical
ly the only" moans of accomplishing
this. The variometer was In great
favor with the old time fan. but now
has pretty nearly dNuppeared This
is von unjust. Whll • the variometer

plate of the It. F. niIk? and the irrld
condenser of the detector tube. The
grlii condenser Is connected in the
usual way ; the grid leak, however, is
connected between grid and positive
filament for o hard tube, which we
prefer to a soft detector. We may
then, use the full voltage on the de
tector plate. - ’
A midget variable comVenser Is con
nected across the variometer. This
condenser Is not used for tuning, but
Is set permanently. It Is therefore
moimted Inside the cabinet and not on
the panel.
In mounting the parts leave euflV
clent distance between the two varl
ometers to avoid back coupling. It
will be well to inouut them at o;e
poslte ends of the tiflnel and to leirve.
tiie middle for the nmll" atupUfler. .
In selecting the parts for your re
ceiver keep in mind that the amplifica
tion In this circuit !« extremely high.
Therefore select ■ all component p.irts
from the best available and do not be
too niggardly as to space. Midget
m !io frequency receivers do not work
well. To tune tlds receiver In-glr. by
setting the aerial condenser at Its mln-
lnpim", then tune the 11 F. variometer
until you bear either the broadcast of
a srati*>/i or Its beat note. Tune the
aerial variometer tmtil signals or
whistles come in loudest.
If the set Is still oscillating turn
tin* aerial condenser a few degrees and
turn the variometer back until the
aerial circuit Is again in tune. If die
set Is still oscillating turn the -aerial
condenser ahead' a hit more and the
variometer back a corresponding
amount Kepeut this until you find g
setting that vTl) keep the receiver from
oscillating You vvill then have the
niaxlninm of sensitivity At Its best,
one stage In tills circuit will be equiv
alent to two In many others So far
we have said nothing about tin- nrldget
cond.cnsTr in parallel with U F. vttrl-

If tlsv weiver covers the entire
wave '-length "range with the midget
'•ondenser all ont, leave It there If
>"U hid however, that you cannot
tune In WIT or KYW, for Instance,
turn the midget until these stations
