JOMN W. HOLWES
1840—'1912
H. t*. DAVIES. Editor and Proprietor.
THURSDAY, JULY 3RD. 1924.
A rain a day will Keep prosperity
away.
Woman played' H leading role in
tht Garden of Eden. Likewise in the
Garden of Madison Square.
The rube who used to blow out the
pas now puts Tt in his flivver tank
and runs sixty miles an hour on the
public highways. '
Edpar A. Brown Wins Victory.
Sunday’s papers stated that the
plank in the Democratic platform de-
noUneinp the Ku Klux Klan by name
lost by the narrow mar pin of one vote.
A correction made thv majority four
votes. Edgar A. Brown, of Barnwell,
made a plea for t^ie preservation o£-
the party, as the result of which a
Pennsylvania- Catholic, instructed iq
vote for the anti-Klan measure,
(harped his vote. Had the majority
U t n just one vote, fts* first stated,
Col. Brown could have claimed the
crx-dit of preserving the Democratic
party intact. As it was, however, he
won a great victory.
Rains, Blight and Weevils.
County Agent Boylston says:
“With the continuation of the
heavy rains that have fallen in mo^i
sections of the county for the past
week, we will find that there will be
an increase in the amount of damage
<1( ne by weevils, blight arid anthrAc-
nose. . .
“The evident fa t is that there was
a rather light infestation of weevils
coming out this Spring; that is, in
< -mpanson to what it was last year.
Put with favorable seasons for thy
hatching of the young weevil, one
will find that very soon the damage
from weevil will Ixcemc very «ori-
eio; in fact, it u generally showing
u; now. Rememlnr that calcium ar-
'• atta properly applie<l in the rorm
dust clouds, will assist a great
(1,4.1 in keeping down the damage.
All farmers interested in dieting cot-
t n will call on Har ry B(>y]ston f< r
as-istance in the proper application
of poisons.
"Anthraenose and gummy stem
I iight are a great deal more damag
ing during rainy seasons, because one
large rain sometimes scatters the
germs sufficiently to cause the crop
to die. The application of spray or
dust is largely a preventive. One
should not wait until the disease is
well developed before anything .is
done.”

TV
Radio is now beginning to loom up
as a real foe of the criminal. In many
cities radio-equipped police depart
ments, according to Mr. W. H. Dun-
can, of the local Exide Service Sta
tion, are ejther be ing considered or
have already l>een established.
In Detroit three big Lincoln touring
eats have recently been equipped with
radio , receiving sets, which will en
able these high-powered and speedy
ca v s to maintain constant ce.mmuni
cation anywhere and at all times with
police headquarters. It is planned
eventually to have seven of these car-
in service. .
In Philadlephia plans are underway
for the installation of similar .radio,
(equipment, which will be used in con
nection with the searchlight sVSitem
inaugurated by the famous General
Butler.
Upon the speed with which the
description of the criminal can be*
placed in the hands of every police-
man after the crime has been commit
ted depends, largely, th? probability
of capture. This has time and again
Uen demonstrated when men and
women without previous criminal ex-
jx nonce and record have committed
crimes and in spite of their lack of
experience have actually managed to
escape. Had the police been warned
in time, the awkward efforts of these
criminals would have quickly caused
them to fall inUi tho police net. This
also applies to the class "of criminals
“known to the police”.
