The honeycomb coil must be tapped
as near the center as possible, in con
struction of the radio frequency unit
known as the “clarifier” described
last week. Careful inspection of the
sides of the coil should be made and
the approximate center turn located.
Tills turn should he pulled out very
slightly and a lead solderejd on.
The photographs and circuit dia
gram Indicate the best way to as
semble the parts, and indicate much
better the constructional details than
can be done in a short description.
The turns on the tuning coil may
be wound in either direction and If
desired the size and shape of this coil
need not be exactly that shown, but
the portion connected across the tun
ing condenser should have an induc
tance of approximately .250 ifillihenry
If for any reason the shape must be
changed. * -——
An extra binding post Is furnished,
connected directly to the grid, to en
able the use of a very short antenna
If a long one Is not available.
The output coll Is completely en
closed In a case to prevent damage to
the leads, and to prevent the “B" bat
tery from being short-circuited. Since
this coil case Is somewhat difficult to
construct, the builder of this unit
should take particular pains to pro-
v‘de suitable, connections to this- coll
which are protected from breakage.
Carefully wrapping the FerthThals with
tape will ordinarily be sufficient. If a
Spider-web coil having about 80 -turns
of wire with a tap on the middle turn
Is more convenient It may he used
Instead of the honeycomb coll. A
good coil may he made with two, wires
wound in parallel on spider-web frame,
each winding having 40 turns of wire.
The outer end!of one winding should
connect to the Inner end of the other
and to the center tap. A flexible two
conductor cord should he provided,to
connect the output coil with the rest
of the.dmrit.
The center tap of the output coll is
connected with a flexible cord to the
plus terminal of the B battery, which
should have the voltage recommended
for the tube to lie provided, for am
plifier use. This coll may he laid on
top or inside the cabinet of the
main receiver whichever is nearest the
grid coil of the detector tube.
It is to be noted that no ground
connection^ are necessary on this
tube are stopped by touching the grid
terminal of the circuit with the finger.
The stabilizing condenser Is adjusted
so that no plucking noise or click is
heard when grid terminal Is touched
with the finger. When the stabilizing
condenser Isjjnce adjusted (and this
adjustment is not difficult to obtain
since the setting is not a critical one
if the device is properly constructed),
It ordinarily need never be touched
again.
In order that tuning be made easy
the “clarifier” tuning dial may he
calibrated against the receiving set
and then later both It and the receiver
may he calibrated for various wave
lengths by Jotting down the positions
where each station is found. It may
he calibrated against the receiving set
by coupling the output coll near the
grid tuning condenser in the "clari
fier" one or two clicks will he heard
in the receivers when the two circuits
are In tune .with each other. If the
construction lias been properly carried
out It will he found that the adjust-

I. Israel Taken Into Captivity (vv.
1-fi).
This was in fulfillment of that which
Amos had prcdicUuLJn the days of
Jeroboam II at a time when the nation
was at the height of Its prosperity.
The northern kingdom was ruled by
nineteen kings, all of wToun Avere
wicked. Their wickedness was not be
cause of lack of Information or op
portunity but In spite - of It. God
promised the first king His blessing

to the end. In the reign of Hoshea,

II. The Sins Which Caused Their
Doom (vv. 7-18).
1. Conformed to the Ways of the
Heathen (vv.7-9). God had command
ed them not to follow In the ways of
the heathen, hut these Israelites, In
stead of maintaining lives of sepa
ration, secretly did that which- was
displeasing to God. Secret sins, as
surely ns open sins, bring niin, for all
things are naked and open to Him
with whom we have to do. The One
who visits judgment upon the sinner
knows nil things.
2. Sene Idols (vv. 10-17). They not
only cohipromised by “walking In the
statutes of the heathen," but wor
shiped their gods. It was a short
step from following In the statutes of
the heathen to worshiping their gods.

was the dreadful Molech worship, the
most cruel rite of heathen worship. It
was done by kindling a ,flre In a hol

the depth to which the Israelite had

(v. 17). When faith^in the true God
wanes men always turn to the-magical

III. The Judgment Falls (v. IS).
At this stage of the drama the cur
tain dropped. God could not be inac
tive longer. c
1. God Was Very-Angry. His anger
Is not raving fury but the revulsion
of His holy nature against sin. God
cannot tolerate sin in His presence..
His wrnttr must strike.'‘ Though He
waits long, the debt must be paid and
that always with compound interest.
There is only one way fo escape God’s
wrath; that Is to turn from sin unto
God through Jesus Christ.
2. Remove Them Out of His Right.
