There was craning of necks on Sun
day when the remote neighbor attend
ed service ut the beautiful atone
church, whose ancient date was regis
tered on the doorpost. The organ was
the pride of all. It w«^ tin* gift of a
now great musician who had come from
I’lalnsvlllo in ids boyhood
Rupert Rolf had rc|rVatedly prom
ised to return to his old home town to
give an exhibition of Ids ^sklll. The
promise hud been unrealiBed.
One daj’ printed i*lucnrd« annou/iccd
that the musician was to arrive that
week In I’lainsville; tiic following
Sabbath he would play upon the gift
organ in the beautiful church.
The placard In the store window
seemed to scream at tier with its red
letters—Rupert Rolf! Rupert Rolf!
/\nd next Sabbath he vta* to play at
the church she attended. Well, might
>be not atill attendV -
‘•Good-by,” said the little girl; “my
mamma would not want me to stop,
•dh. Mrs. Gay, your eyes are wet."
Mrs. Gay laughed shakily. “Why, so
they are,” she said.
She wore a dark dress the day of
Rupert Rolf’s church recltnl. She went
early to take her seat In the gallery,
md sat palpitating throughout the
preliminary opening of the service.
The minister explained that he was
waiting, with little hope, the appear
ance of Rupert Rolf. The musician
had not arrived In the town ns ex-
»>ected, detained |»y engagements, hut
be hud sent a letter, assuring his pres
ence if possible, at the morning serv
ice.
The allotted time of waiting passed.
The minister looked, smiling, over his
people. “Our usual organist is out of
Town," he said. “I wonder If some
me will not volunteer to play for us
this morning? Please,'* he begged—
and paused. There was no ri&pon.se;
again the request was given.
"This is an unusual circumstance,”
the minister explained, troubled. "Will
not some one kindly help in this muu-.
nor?’’
Again no response, . '-’-L,
Some one arose In the gallery—sig
nified her willingness.
The audience'could uni sec the vol
unteer organist who went swiftly to
take her place before the keys. They
saw u dark clothed baj k, an envelop

The niuMgnouVed forth, li was an

She stood a moment, limling n>k
way—the volunteer organist was the
disapproved Mrs. Gay. Her face shone
white and sweet beneath the drooping
brim of the prim blftck bat—then sip*
was seated beyond their sight. The
•minister came down the pulpit stair
hurriedly afterward that he might not
mins her, to extend Ids thanks. Many
lingered, looking back curiously. A

murmured clmkily: "Gay!"
The iiftic woman smiled: a smile
