County Agent Tells of Experience of Barnwell County Farmer. AI>out six years ago a fanner in the Galilee section of Barnwell Coun ty—Mr. Johnson Black—was growing Hnlf-and-Half cotton. Having ob served his cotton during the growing t-Wson before, 1 found that he had n great deal of damage done by black root, or wilt, and root knot. In the early Spring of 1918, I went to see Mr. Black and discussed with him the necessity of his using p wilt resistant type of cotton. Mr. Black was rather hard to convince that he should not plant Half-and-Half cotton. He said that it was a good cotton, it turned out more lint per hundred pounds of seed cotton than any other he had ever tried, and all in all it was the best cotton he knew of. After some argument I convinced him that it was a very poor cotton to plant, due to the fact that it had the shortest staple of any cotton, that it was more sus ceptible to root knot and nnthracnose, he finally agreed io buy 10 bushels of old fashioned Dixie, which cotton was small 1k)11, leafy, late type of cortton. However, he planted this cotton, made a comparative test along with his HaJf-and-Htilf seed, and'at the end of the year he fojiinl that ^ if he had bought pure Dixie seed to have plant ed his entire crop he would have made over $">00 clear. So when the new early big boll Dixie Triumph was put on the market, Mr. Black immediately seized the opportunity to secure some of these seed through the County Agent. ^ In I'.IL’O the County' Agent bought one thousand bushels of Dixie Tri umph cooperatively for the farmers of this county, placing thc-e seed . with 4U or HO different farmers. As a result of this work with Mr. Bhfk and others there has been a gre it saving to the farmers iff Barnwell County, probably ranging from ten to twenty thousand dollars per year. Mr. Black h.as told his story to prob ably L’T) to HR) other farmers, and'.is a result of this piece of work, great good has been done in the control of tliis very bad disease called black ix>ot or wilt. There rs another disease that goe* hand in hand with black root, namely, root knot. This .disease is in the soil and helps to make the cotton ^jjalks weak, thereby giving the black root an opportunity of killing them. The method'of control of this dt ; - case along with root knot is VerySdtn- . pie and consists in the following Grow nothing but pure Brabham' iron peas (which arc not available in,, Barnwell County) or velvet lieans in your corn for hay. keeping cotton, the .ordinary types of cow peas and soy beam off of this land for two years, then afterwards, using pure Dixie Tri umph cotton seed, but owing to the tact that rout knot also does damage it will pay every farmer having those diseases in his land to conform to the •above out line. In addition to Dixie Triumph being wilt mistant, it H an exceedingly good type of cotton, l>oing fairly early, and it is reported by a large .lumber of farmers that hs bolls aix' somewhat harder then the ordinary types of cotton, and. therefore, le«s damage is done to tne cotton from weevil punctures late in the season. Any one interested in securing in formation where good Dixie Triumnh cotton seed may he purchased will take the matter un with H. G. Boy Is top, County Agent.
