Aft<*r all is sjiid and done, a town
is no better than the people who live
in it.
of the efforts being made to lower
the price of the raw material, that
such action is in restraint of trade.
The cotton mills realize that there
i-t a great shortage of cotton and , it
seems that they are determined not
to pay a fair price for the remnant?
of the 1023 erop.
And still another thing: In the
face of all the curtailment talk, con
sumption for January, this year, was
almost the heaviest on. record, and
the government’s report'on the num
ber of active spindles* • was a hear-
record-breaker.
There seems to he “somethipg rpt-
ten in Denmark” when the price
can be forced down at the whim of- r
few moneyed men. * • '

Figures and Liars.
That “figures, don't tic, hut liars
‘some times figure” has ln*on proven
once -moiv when Southern senato's
investigated the r< cent bt'af raids i n
1 ho Kitton market which have c * t
the. South millpyn' v ;xif doll •ill This
investigation has disclosed -the fact
that “the govvrnnu*nt’s cotton statis
ticians, in endeavoring to cstinuU'*
crojis, make niisttikes, but in-tead, of
candidly admitting their mistakes
priKteed to juggle figures .. Th<*
statisticians on the stand testified
tluit consumption by la t November
was more than r >(M),000 bales in es-
cess of thi* number of bales which it
had lH*cn estimated would -be produi -
ed. But the statisticians did tiof
frankly tell the country that the es
timate had proven incorrect.' hrstead,
they adde'd to their original estimate
the dOO.OOO hales so as to make the
totals balance, and thus, according to
Southern Senators, it was made to
appear that there was more cotton in
existence than actually existed. This
condition affected-the market dcleter-
iously from the standpoint of the pro
ducer of cottofi.”
It is inconceivable that a smtdl
group of men should he allowed to
continue to so juggle figures with its
consequent lies to the .South of mil
lions of dollars. The production of
cotton has been made precarious
enough by the advent of the boll
weevil, without the price >>f the staple
being hammered down by the gam
blers of Wall Street, aided and abet
ted, as it seems, b‘y the jugglers of
the government.
Another thing that -hmild be in-
vostigated is the concerted action on
the part of the mills in curtailing pro
duction. .It is quite possible, in view
mobile, he twisted his ankle aTid at
iirst it was thought that his leg was
broken. The injury is quite painful,
put he is able to get around with the
assistance of a walking stick.,
