The annual report of the health de
partment, submitted to council, showd
that there were no serious epidemics
the past year and the health of

a siege of measles last spring and a
smallpox epidemic earlier this winter,
but there have been no serious after
effects and strict quarantine measures
have resulted in practically wiping out
of the disease. There are at present
two cases In the city. This equidemic
started when 'negroes scattered sev
eral cases on the outskirts, after con-
traetthg the disease elsewhere.

200, were made during the year and
new areas are steadily being put into
the connecting zone. Despite the rap
id growth of the city ip. sections where
sewer lines have not been laid, the
number of surface closets U being held

the city officials are gradually put
ting in extesions as rapidly as finan

small, shapely rolls.
Ham Tomato Toast.—
Take one-half table-
spoonful of minced
onion, one tablespoonful ;
•pf minced green pepper,
took in two .tntdespoon-
fuls of butter; then add two., table- 1
spoonfuls of flour, a teaspoonful of
sugar, .u few dashes of pepper, one-
half teaspoonful of salt, one-half cup
ful of minced ham and a cupful of to
mato puree. Serve on toast.
Almond Toast.—Mix five cupfuls of
flour, one and one-half cupfuls of
sugar, one-fourth of a cupful of .but
ter, one-lmlf cupful of milk, four eggs,
two teaspoonfuls of baking powder,
four tafrfespoonfuls of olive oil. Mix
well and add at the last one-fourth of
a pound of split almonds, unblanched.
Knead lightly and.well’, using flour on
the hand’s-to keep from sticking. Turn
Into three well-greased bread pans and
bake in a moderate oven until brown.
Cut the lolTves Into half-inch slices'ttnd
place in a pan to brown 'on both
sides. Cool before packing ’ away-
These are excellent to serve with af
ternoon tea or coffee.
Fruit Drop Cakes.—Cream two-
thirds of a cupful of any sweet fat,
add one cupful of brown sugar, one
teaspoonful of cinnamon, one-third of
a cupful of raisins and currants, two-
thirds of a cupful of walnuts'or pe
cans, two well-beaten eggs, one-hatf
easpoonful of vanilla,* one pint of
flour, two teaspoonfuls of baking pow
der. Drop * by spoonfuls on baking
sheets. Bake In a moderate oven.
Creamed Peanuts on Toast.—Scald
two cupfuls of milk in a double,boiler,
reserving a little to mix with a tea
spoonful of cornstarch; ndd ohe tea
spoonful, of onion Jnlce u one-teaspoon-
fur of salt, one-fourttrof a cupful of
chopped stuffed olives, green peppers
or celery. *Cojr»k until thick, add one
cupful of finely minced peanuts and
serve at once on toast. -

Rattlesnake Attacks' Horry Man.

was cutting wood and started to pit k
