A recent report by a sanitary en gineer in charge _of malaria, control work in South (Carolina, however, gives some extraordinary figures. For instance,'in 1923 there were only 98 eases of malaria in Barnwell County as compared with 654 in 1922, Very large decrease, while in Spartanburg County there were 112 eases in 1923 and 106 in 1922, an increase over the preceding year.. In other words, so far as malaria was concerned, Barn well Coynty was a better place to Jive last year than Spartanburg. (In many other respects it is a-, better place to live any year.) A great change has been wrought in that county- ;i-n -the eight years Mr. Bbylston has been there. Besides’ cotton,—there are now m il e than half a dozen suBstahTTat market crops. Of these asparagus, .^anta^ loupes, cucumbers, waterm^fon^ and peanuts stand at the top in value, - bfft as most significant seif-suppording disposition of fanners of Barnwell is the record of shipments of hogs,'hay,' peas and oat and rye seed. Here is evi dence of not only living at- home btif of having a surplus of farm supplies to'sell for cash. Another, manifestation of the right kind of progress is in the report-that! .j. Barnwell farmers are leading* in soil- building*with the velvet bean; they are also systematically fighting all pests of the field; using the best seed and giving attention to thorough preparation and cultivation of land and to rotation. ^ Evidently .Barnwell is preparing for independence whatever may happen in the future to the cotton-growing industry.—The ate.
