ranged by Miss Elma Cave, County
Home Demonstration Agent, and
Many Notables to Attend Meeting
There on July 4th.
Allendale, June 26.—The local
lodge of Masons, together with the
district officials will be host to the
Masons of the Seventh Masonic Dis
trict of South Carolina, on July 4th,
with probably the greatest day that
Masons have ever enjoyed in this
every club member in the county is town. Many Masonic notables will

Club members of all the clubs in the
county will hold their annual county
short course in Barnwell on June
29-30. Letters have been sent out
but it is quite impossible for your
agent to send one to those of you

if you have not received a letter,
we are expecting you anyway. Don't
fail to be here Saturday, June 30th.

A newspaper man, like the prophet
of old, “ is not without honor satfe in
hts own country.’V We realized this
quite,-forcibly last week when the
members of the Fourth Estate were
warmly welcomed and honored by
the people of Spartanburg and the
officials of the C. C. & 0. Railroad,
more familiarly known as the
“Clinchfield.” In fact, they seemed
to take a keen delight in honoring
those who toil so unselfishly and'un-
tiringly for the betterment and ad
vancement of the Palmetto State.

latives responded in kind and the
annual meeting of the South Caro
lina Press Association was a success

portunity to view the beautiful
mountain scenery in that part of
North Carolina, and the only incon^

venience suffered was a delay of
two or three hours for dinner. The
schedule called for a picnic dinner
at Erwin, Tenn., with the Kiwanis
Club as host. WThen it was found
that it would be imoossible to reach
that thriving little city in time, Mr.
Phetteplace wired ahead for a,
special train and a committe and a
part of the delightful picnic “feed" |
were loaded on a baggage ear and J
met the press special at Avery, N.
C. t and the wants of “the innrtr j
man" cared for.
The party reached Erwin a few
hours later and were met by a num
ber of citiaens in automobiles and a

in Barnwell- County, will be held at
the Court House in Barnwell about
12 o’clock M., Friday, July 6th. This
information is contained in a letter
from Mr. J. P. Darby, secretary of
the S. C. Railroad Commission, to
the Chief of Police of this city and
the Sheriff of Barnwell County, as
follows:
“Commissioners Wade and Coney
will arrive at Barnwell, S. C., bit Fri
day, July 6th, 1923, to hold examina
tion of operators and drivers of
motor Vehicles for hire, operating in
Barnwell County. They will hold

the recovery of the body of a drown
ed youth by Dh Ronald C. Glyes,
formerly of Blackville but now
county health officer of Edgecomb
County, N. C. The news item in

first drove up to the pond he heard
voices, but not at the time knowing
what the trouble was, paid little at

joined by Governor and Mrs. Mc
Leod, who reached Spartanburg on
an afternoon train.
Following a brief business session
early that evening, the members of
the Chamber of Commerce were
hosts at an elegant banquet at the
Cleveland Hotel, during the progress
of jwhich the guests were entertain
ed \by vocal and instrumental solos
by local celebrities. Ten-minute
talks were also made by Governor
McLeod and others.
This concluded the entertainment
in Spartanburg, bu* was only the
prelude to the most enjoyable part
of the meeting—the trip over the
