War Heroes.
A monument of “living flame,” to me
morialize the heroic dead of Toledo, O.,
and of Lucas- county, is to be erected
op tlie mosT prominent spot in Memo
rial park, a new project, which, ac
cording to,founders, will soon become
a reality.
Sweeping through the park Is a road
way, already known to Toledo citizens
as “Memorial Way." Sides of this
roadway are flanked by tyees, each of
which is named for some man from To
ledo or Lucas county who made the
aupreme sacrifice in the World war,
hearing his name In everlasting bronze
and keeping forever fresh his momnry.
Other roadways of the park will he
named after rltlen, towns and pifrticu*
lar engagements In whlrh these men
fought. The whole centers around the
great monument, where u tower of tin*

light which may be seen for mile*.

A “buck private" during the World
war, Lawrence 0. Stewart, American
Legion member of lH?s Moines, is now
obtaining recognltloh as a writer,
painter and sculptor.
Stewart Is the author of "Rainbow
Bright," nn informal history of the
Forty-second division, with v whlch he
served in France as a private in the
sanitary detachment of the One Hun
dred and Sixty-eighth infantry. Illus
trations for the hook are leaves tom
from the sketch book which Stewart
cui*ri(>d^in his gas kinsk. They were
prepared oftentimes under tire. A
preface for the book lias been written
by Col. K. It. Bennett, who commanded
the One Hundred and Sixty-eighth in
fantry in action.
Stewart is a graduate of the Chicago
Art institute In painting and sculpture,

1 cop Grape-Nuts I egg
I pound veal, mutton ft tablespoon letnoo-
or beef j ulce
TV pound salt pork 2 tablespoons tomato
1 teaspoon salt catsup
Vi teaspoon pepper V4 tablespoon chopped
2 tablespoons milk parsley
Vi minced onion
Put ike meat through s food chopper, add season*
ings. Krown minced onion in s little fst before
adding Grape-Nuts. milk, and slightly beaten
eggs Pack in a baking duh, shaping like a loaf
of baked bread and smooth evenly on top. Rake
for forty-five minutes, basting frequently using
one-haif cup of hot water, a tablespoon at a time.
Just before taki ig from oven, brush with some of
the beaten white of egg and a little milk. Brown
for one minute. Makes four portions.
GRAPE-NUTS Loaf Coke
1 cup Grape-Nut* ; ‘ 2Vi cups Pastry flour
Vy cup butter 2 teaspoons baking-
IVj cups sugar powder
“ ***’ ... r_ } teaspoon salt
1 cup milk Vi teaspoon vanilla
l-ream butter and sugar; add egg-yolks well
beaten; then milk and Grape-Nuts. Best the
mixture thoroughly, fold in alternately the stiffly
beaten egg-whites and flour sifted with baking-
powder three times; lastly, add the vanilla. Have

fill two-thirds full and bake in a moderate oven
for forty-five minute*.
