Monroe Kendall Harden, Great Cypress. W\ T. Rilty, Rosemary. L. R. Baughman, Bennett Springs. Williston, April 1.—Mr. and Mrs. 'Jim Edwards of Greenwood spent last Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Willis. Mrs. T. M. Willis has returned from a visit to her father, Mr. Saw yer, in Johnston. Miss Louise felack of Converse college, accompanied by Misses Helen Richardson of Ashland, Ky., Mary Elizabeth Weeks of West, Miss., and Blanche Rose of Valdosta, Ga., and Belton Johnson of Jackson, Miss., will spend the Easter holi days with Miss Black’s parents, Capt. and Mr. W’. D. Black. Mesdames A. H. Pregnal, J. E. Steadman, Elbert Steadman. Boyce Steadman and Elmore Steadman and two of Mrs. Pregnal’! children, all of Denmark, were visitors in Willia- ton Wednesday. In spite of the inclement weether, quite a large crowd gathered at Meyer’s Mill Friday, the occasion being the annual reunion of the members of Camp Geo. W. Morrall, U. C. V. The usual excellent dinner was served and a splendid program rendered. Miss C. Only four taxpayers met the board. The board passed a resolution, re questing the Auditor to enforce the 50 per cent, penalty required by law against all taxpayers who fail to make the required returns be fore February 20th next year, at it often happens that there pre as many as 1,800 additional returns in this county out of a total of 7,000, while Aiken County .with its cotton mill element and 17,000 taxpayers, has only about 300 additional returns, it it understood. The board cannot reach these additional returns, as they are made when a person pays taxes in the Fall. MISFEASANCE IN OFFICE CHARGED CLAIM FOR $200 DECLARED TO BE ILLEGAL. Brown and-Bush, county attorneys, by Miss E. M. Kirkland, clerk of the County Board of Directors, the board requests that such action aa is prop er in the premises be taken againat Mr. E. G. Birt, former member of the Board of County Commiaaioners, for alleged “miafeaaance in office, or to recover for the county the money, or otherwise.’’ The action of the board ia the result of a claim for $200 for damages to his crop by run ning the Barnwell-Elko road through hit farm, which Mr. Birt is aaid to have presented at the last me*ting of the Board of County Commission ers, of which he was a member, the claim being approved and the money collected thereon. Announce Engagement. * OUTTXJ It appear* a bo ia th* record Mr. Birt, bring a County Commis sioner. was disqualified under th* law from passing upon any claim that h* personally might hava against the County, and that an act ing Commissioner was appointed by the Clerk of Court, under the pro visions of law, to pass upon his claim. It appears further that Mr. Birt’s case against the County is still pending before the 'Circuit Court. However, the records of this office show that on March 6th, 1923, the last meeting at which the old Commissioners sat, Mr. Birt pre sented a claim for $200, swore to it as claimant, approved it himself as County Commissioner, and collected the money thereon.
