L«f illation to Remove a'Menace.
The Barnwell People expresses dis
approval of the suggestion made by
one or more newspapers in the upper
part of South Carolina that a law be
passed requiring cotton growers to
use poison on their cotton to des
troy the boll weevil, Put it urges the
legislature to enact a law requiring
fanners to destroy the cotton stalks
as soon as the crop has been gather
ed.
The State believes that legislation
of this character should lie enacted
only after the most mature consid
eration and as a last resort to safe
guard the public interests. We are
hopeful that a campaign of education,
earnestly pressed by intelligent in
terests, will have satisfactory re-
sufts. There is one phase of the
problem, however, in regard to the
general menace from unde* troy ad
rotten stalks that seems difficult of
solution without some legislative ac
tion A few days ago one of The
State's correspondent* pointed out
that the ~uwe year renter" had no
