A GOOD SIGN
One of the mont cheering incidents
noted at »the^£itnpaign meetin
Barnwell Monday was the^gretft a
mount of applause that greeted the
statements of Messrs^ McLeod and
Laney relative to law enforcement
in South Carolina. “The crime wave
will not be stopped,” said Mr. Me
Leod, “except by the voice of the
people in the verdicts o£ juries and
the sentences of courts, upheld by
the Chief Executive,” and added that
he would not interfere with these
verdicts, either througn sympathy or
personal preference. Mr. Laney’s
sentiments are surptantially the
same.
The People is indeed glad to see
that South Carolinians are fast be
coming aroused over the shameful
crime situation in this State, where
human life has apparently lost its
true value and the operations of il
licit whiskey distillers have become
so obnoxious to all law-abiding
citizens. *
Not until a wholesome respect for
the law has been instilled into the
minds of the law-breakers can we
hope to enjoy any sense of security
in our daily lives.

Miss Elinor Laird of Aiken wa« the

Mr. Hugh Fowke made a flying

Mrs. Oscar P. Hay. and chi Wren.
Nell. Rosalie and Thomas, are apend-

Mrs. John M Gantt.
Quite a nice game of base ball be
tween the home team and Snclling
was enjoyed by the local fans on
Thursday.
Boll weevils do not. as a rule seem
very noticeable as yet in the cotton
fields in this section, probably owing
to the recent continued dry spell. The
community has for the past week
been visited by refreshing rains,
which have been of great benefit to
the corn and vegetable crops.
BILLIE BURKE A
“CHORINE’ IN COMEDY
Fopular Star has Excellent Role in
“The Education of Elizabeth”
Billie Burke had her .first ex
perience in the chorus when scenes of
her latest vehicle “The Education of
Elizabeth” which will be presented at
the Vamp Theatre . next Thursday,
were filmed. There have v been
numerous stage and screen stars
who have made their way to stardom
via the “merry merry,” but Miss
Burke is not one of these.
Miss Burke in the role of Eliz
abeth Banks, a “chorine" in a big
New York Musical revue, and the
ripening scenes of the production
show her at work with the company.
Being the wife of Flo Ziegfeld, the
well known New York theatrical
manager, Miss Burke obtained the
most lavish revue for her comely
that was ever seen in a motion pic
ture studio. A complete number from
Ziegfeld’s “Midnight Frolic” was
transported to the set with costumes
which were remarkable for their
artiabe beauty
am of the
Announced as the most remarkable
production with which the name of
David W. Griffith has yet been as
sociated is his “Way Down East,”
made from the famous stage play of
the same name and which will be
shown in Barnwell for the first time
aFthe Vamp Theatre Saturday, July
1st. . • * '
As is expected the usual Griffith
effects and embellishments are said
to be found in this latest work in
abundance. It will be presented here
with an augmented orchestra furnish
ing musical accompaniment which
even the most spectacular of stage
offerings could hardly afford to offer
on tour; digressing from the stage
version he will take his audience
from the simplicity of countryside to
'the lavishness of city mansions and
thua display in a new series of color
schemes an array of elaborate gowns
and surroundings typical of wealth.
At the end will come the famed ter
rifying New England blizzard and the
break up of the ice gorge in the
Connecticut River, scenes which in
other cities have made audiences grip
their neats.
Mr. Griffith has set for himself
I
such a pace and a standard to follow
that he must need supply the most
wonderful in spectacle and the most
finished in production. However,
there may be those who in an
ticipation of such things, overlook
the greatest of achievements of the
master artist in screen production.
Griffith seized upon “Way Down I
East” and paid a pretty sum for the
screen rights alone, not for the
spectacular opportunities it afforded
Any play that can enjoy a vogue a
mong American theatregoers for a!
period of more than twenty yean
possesses something more than [
pastoral humor and striking scenes
and "Way Down East" has ever in |

That the pare love of Anna Moore,;
betrayal and subsequent suffer j

Down East" and Is what has made It
endure through all these years, there
ran hr no doubt. It was this that 1
appealed ta David W Griffith In
selecting it as his medium of pro- j
dartion. Her story la that of a wo

this forth ta all the strength of his I
vision and art. In doing so he has
moulded a moral foe mankind and
strikes home to the socalled stronger ,
sex • lesson which has often been j
forgotten as concerns a single stand- ]
ard for male and female, probably i
since the age of sin.
To Lillian Gish has fallen the task
of essaying Anna Moore for the 1
screen and very likely to posterity.
Hers is a more far-reaching and hu
man Anna Moure thkn the spoken
stage drama could permit and ia noth
a person as has existed almost from
the time of Mother Eve and existed
in every community on earth where
