Several years ago The People advo cated the passage of a bill *by the Legislature requiring persons who bring civil actions in the courts to deposit a bond guaranteeing the costs of such actions. Such a law would save the county thousands of dollars and at the same time would tend to keep down useless litigation. Many cases with no merit whatever con gest the calendars of the courts and, in scores of instances, when the plain tiff loses his case he is unable to pay the costs. If there is such a law upon the statute books, it is a dead letter and should be put into full force and ef fect, and if no such law exists it should be passed by the next Legisla ture. The Lenten faster must abstain not only from flesh, but must do without fish, eggs, butter, cheese and even the oil which la ao much a part of Greek cooking. During Holy week the ortho dox Greeks eat hardly anything but bread. - As soon as Lent approaches— 1 the Greek fast. It Is called—the shops where food is sold are decorated with evergreen, and the Lenten fare Is temptingly displayed. As the Greeks do not consider aheltflsh either meat or fish, crabs, lobsters-and other crus taceans are sold and eaten with par ticular relish. The longest fasting time for the Greeks Is “The Great Fast,” which lasts 48 days. The next longest fast is of 40 days. It begins Nov. 15 and ends the day before the great feast of Christmas. During August there are 15 day# of fasting. Beginning the Monday after the first Sunday after Pentecost, until June 20. Is the next longest fast. This year It was 10 fntl days. Add to these long fasts six scat tered fusts of one day each, and there la a total of 119 fast days which or thodox Greeks and all visitors must observe each year.
