Charleston.—Addresses were deliv
ered at the formal opening of the Med
ical College of South Carolina by Dr.
Kobert Wilson,"Jr., dean; Dr. Zeigler
and Dr. de Erve, and the enrollment
for the beginning of this term gave
rise to expressions of much satisfac
tion on the part of the faculty'mem
bers. One hundred and seventy-two
students have registered in the de
partments of medicine and pharmacy
and 40 in the school of nursing, bring
ing the total student body to 212.
Some time next month, the Citadel
Square Baptist church remodeling and
extension project will be completed,
giving this large congregation one of
the most complete church plants in
the South, at an expenditure of 3150,•
000, which include remodeling the
main church building .erecting a
large five Iftory Sunday school unit,
practically, a part of the main struc
ture, and furnishing and equipping
the two institutions. The main church
auditorium will have a seating capa
city of .1,500, and the Sunday school
will take care of 2,500 teachers and
pupils. The Sunday school unit con
tains seven assembly halls, 67 class
rooms, an elaborate kitchen, and oth
er features. The whole design Is
aimed to give a complete church
plant, second to none in the South.

Chester.—A big item of news along
construction lines comes from Great
Falls, about 20 miles from Chester, in
that the Republic Cotton mills, R. S.
Mebane, president, will erect, start
ing at once, 15 or more modern store
buildings on Main street of that place.
The dwellings now on that street will
be torn down and erected elsewhere.
The new stores'will be thoroughly up-
todate, brick and concrete, plate
glass fronts, illuminated with elec
tricity and equipped with water works
and sewerage.

Clemson College.—The annual meeU

which was to have been held Septem

tic matter as between Great Britain
-and Ireland the fact is the agreement
between Prime Minister Lloyd George
and Eamonn de Valera to enter a per
sonal discussion on October 11th of
the questions at issue has caused
much gratification here.
For unquestionably the settlement
of the Irish problem will have a bear
ing on the relations between the
United States and Great Britain at
the forthcoming Washington confer
ence.
While there is no such thing as a
consensue of opinion in official quar
ters on such a delicate thing as the
Irish problem, a dominant view is
that Mr. Lloyd George has cleverly re
newed the negotiations with the Sinn
Fein without causing either side to
seem to be surrendering its major de
mand. Such information as trickles In
from reliable sources .however. Indi
cates that the British prime mtfitster
is determined not to grant absolute in
dependence to Ireland
The hope of solution lies in a refer
endum by the people who are so weary
of warfare that they are said to
be ready to approve the settlement
which the British government is pre
paring to offer.
Wants Congrsss to Adjourn.
Washington.—The Harding adminis
tration does not want congress in ses
sion during the first few weeks of the
disarmament conference.
This desire has been communicated
to congressional leaders by high ad
ministration officials.
