A j rea( jy Washington. — Practically every ira Agreement Reached Also to Decrease Manufacturers’ Tax on Candy From 6 to 3 Per Qent. 1 ,, Washington. — Practically winding up revision of the levy section of the 1918 tax laws, the house ways and means committee republicans voted "to increase from $2,000 to $2!500 the exemption allowed married men hav ing an annual net income of $5,000 or less. This change would be retroac tive to January 1, 1921, and would be in addition to the increase of $200 in exemption of each dependent of a nead of a family previously decided upon. Agreement also was reached, it was said, to decrease the manufac turers’ tax of candy, from 5 to 3 per cent, the manufacturers’ tax ton furs from 10 to 5 per cent, the tax on art works from 10 to 6 per cent, and to repeal all of the so-called luxury lev ies. In voting to repeal the so-called luxury taxes, the majority members decided to substitute, if possible, a manufacturers' tax on the same ar ticles. if desired to be sold at sums in excess of specified prices. The Hartsville. — The Coker coll grounds have been greatly beautified by much work on driveways, walks and hedges. The driveways have been widened so that it is now unnecessary to drive on the grass when passing other vehicles. The old driveways which were not needed have been stopped and grass sown. There is now a new broad driveway running all around the Open Air theater, a new walk leading from the gymnasium to Home avenue, and a hedge all around the college premises which will be beatuiful when it grows out. Much improvement work has been done in front of south domitory in the way of new walks, flwer beds and lawns. The same has been done around the domestic science building. The north dormitory which was damaged by smoke and water at the recent fire will be worked over. ‘ The Open Air theater is now cover ed with closely trimmed grass and is a credit to Coker college and Hartsville. ; Dr. E. W. Sikes said that the senfor class next year would be the largest in the history of the college, practically all of the juniors of last year returning to take up senior work.
