MILLIONS OF BEES POISONED
Damage by Weevils In Orangeburg i
County This Season, It la Stated
Will bo Something Enormous.
Orangeburg.—Farmers all over low-
dr Carolina killed millions of bees thia
past spring while they were trying to
kill the boll weevil, if reports coming
to the office of L. 8. Wolfe, farm d«m-
onstration agent, are true. Several
farmers hi Orangeburg county noticed
large numbers^ of dead bees around
their gums and upon investigation they
found that the bees had been .sating
the poisoned syrup mixture put on cot
ton plants in an effort to control the
weevil. Where calcium arsenate had
been dusted on as recommended by
the United States goveenment, there
seems to have been no damage to the
bees, but the syrup-cal-arsenate mix
ture seems to have played havoc with
the little honey gatherers.
The boll weevil damage in Orange
burg county will be something enor
mous. Mr. Wolfe says. He says that
the damage to cotton Is spotted, but
that, no fields have escaped damage.
Some fiefds will not make.^.quarter of
a bale to the acre where last season a
bale or more was made. It seems as

best estimates obtainable it looks aa
