“WILLISTON, BIGGEST LITTLE
- TOWN IN SOUTH CAROLINT”
Hospitality and Cooperation Outstanding Fea
tures in Town’s Development.--Some En
terprises That Ar 3 Contributing to
v Prosperity of People.
“Welcome to Williston, the Biggest
Little Town in South Carolina,” is the
slogan adopted by the leading mer
chants of that progressive little city
for the five big days of the Redpath
Chautauqua, which opens Thursday,
the 21st inst. And, it might be add
ed in passing, that is the attitude a-
dopted by all of the people every day
in the year towards “the stranger
within their gates.” A “WELCOME"
in big capitals is extended to all.
While hospitality is an enviable
trait that is possessed by many k»wns
in the South, so much so that it has
come to be looked upon as a character
istic peculiar to this section of the
Nation, Williston has another big as
set that is of incalculable value to
her—CO-OPERATION. Ami it ia
the possession of the Community
Spirit to the Nth degree that is
pushing her to the forefront with re
markable rapidity and that makes
possible the big things that she is
accomplishing.
Beginning today, Thursday, 1 April
21st, the Redpath Bureau, of Chicago,
will stage a five-day Chautauqua un
der the auspices of the business men
of Williston. The significance of this
will be realized better when it is
known that Williston is the smallest
town in the*United States to book the
Redpath Chautauqua,' which is cop-
sidered to be the best in the country.
This Is its second appearance in that
town, the occasion having been mad*
a huge success last year, and it is
confidently predicted that that success
will he duplicated during the next
week. •
It was old Bill Shakespeare, we
believe, who said: “The play’s the
thing.” With the Williston people at
present, . “The Chautauqua’s the
thing.” And while this special edi
tion of The Barnwell People is is
sued primarily to help promote the
success of the Chautauqua in Barn
well’s sister town; the writer wonld
be derelict in his duty if he did not
touch upon some of the high lights
of the town’s development.
Scattered throughout these pages
will be found the advertisements of
the progressive merchants and other
business men of that hustling little
city. The fact that they bought
space in his edition almost without
solicitation stamps them as being
progressive, for they realize 1 that
’“advertising is tfie ft re under fbfe
builder of busipefe*.^ They speak
for themseives and fer their town
in their advertisements and a care
ful perusal of each and every one is
urged upon the readers of The Peo
ple. Many men desire no better
epitaph upon their tombstones thaw
