The People wi>hes that everybody
could and would stop talkinK “hard
times." Ha\'e you ever noticed how
depressing such talk is upon the aver
age person? The next time you have
the opportunity, watch a yroup of
men discussing affair- in general.
They will admit that money is
"tipht," that th' price of cotton is
way htdow the cost of production, that
the banks and merchants are not m
a position to extend as lihera! credit
as they have m the past, that present
conditions arc had, and so on, but
underlying their ronversation is a tone
of optimism in the future, without
which this old world would be a sorry
place to live indeed. They beliovo

in our way of living and conducting

and feed stuff and with confidence in
our ability to overcome obstacles we
can win hack prosperity

is below the cost of production and

ability to earn a livelihood and an

He realizes that under present con
ditions the South faces a tremendous
loss on her chief product cotton
but instead of bewailiny his fate he
sets about to find a solution of his
problem. He may talk of economy
but never of hard times. What we
need at present is more of his type
and fewer calamity howlers.
We have all heard the story of the
man who left home one morniny, rad
iating good health and fellowship.
The first person he met remarked how
“poorly" he was looking, and like
wise the next, and the next, and so
on, until the cheerful smile gradually
left his face and he began to wonder
if he really was failing in health. This
kept up and by nightfall he had re
tired to his bed and summonded his
doctor. Thus docs the calamity howl
er yet in his insidious work and the
patient finally believes that he is in
a much worse fix than he really is.
There have been campaigns avainst
the germs that threaten our physi
cal health - let’s wage one against the
germ that is threatening our finan
cial health let’s declare war against
the calamity howler.
