‘The Price of Paper.”
Under the above caption The
Bamberg Herald publishes a pertinent
article in reference to the probability
(or rather improbability) of any im
mediate reduction in the cost of news
papers and job printing. The situa
tion facing the publishers of the coun
try is so clearly set forth that we are
reproducing the article herewith^for
the readers of The People:
As many of the friends of The
Herald have made inquiries as to the
probability of reduction in cost of
newspapers and - paper goods gener
ally, it may not be out of place to
relate a few facts here. We are aften
reminded by customers of quotations
made some weeks or months ago,
and the question is frequently asked
why no reductions are being made,
inasmuch as goods of "‘most kinds
have declined in price. We are com
pelled to reply that there is no Reduc
tions in the cost of stationery or
publishing, and we are now rather of
the opinion that the public may never
again expect the 16w prices of the
pre-war period.
The pre-war price of news prinT
paper was $2.65 per 100 pounds. To
day there is no quotation on news
print, nor has there been for the past
year or so. Various dealers sell it
for from 10 1-2 cents to 16 cents a
pound. We believe it can be bought
by the trade generally around 14
cents a pound, and by those who have
cbnfTacf*' ai pricen
. Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie. G. Richard
son, of Raleigh, N. C., are spending
the holidays in the city with rel
atives. ~
Workmen have started excavating
for the foundation of Barnwell’s new
theatre Building, which will be erect
ed by Mr. M. C.JDiamond on his Main
Street lot next to the building of the
Farmers Union Merchantile Co.
When completed it will be occupied
by Mr. E. F. Woodward, proprietor
of the Woodland Theatre. It k.
understood that the stage will be large
enough to accommodate the usual run
of road shows. ^ -

but there has been no decline; on the
contrary. The Herald bought paper
two months ago for 9 1-2 cents, and
R would have to pay now, from the
aame dealer, 10 1-2 cents, a recent ad
vance of one cent a pound.. This
means that where it used to cost 1-4
cent for the paper on which each
Herald was printed, it now cost* a lit
tle more than one cent. The Herald
has been fortunate in having a paper
connection with a house that has
never profiteered in news print.
Many of our exchanges are how print
ed on paper that costs them a cent
and a half for each paper. With the
exception of a few emergency l«»ta,
The Herald has never paid in exceaa
of 9 1-2 cents a pound for paper, but
will have to pay a cent a pound more
for our next lot.
The situation in regard to job
printing papers is about the same as
with print paper, except that there
are regular quotations. The price of
Hammermill Bond, a popular med
ium grade of paper, on July 1 last
was 22 cents per pound. The price
list of Dec. 15 gives it at 24 1-2 cenLs,
but no advance has been * made in
the last sixty days. The price of
Strathmore Parchment, a very high
grade of joh paper, on July 1 was 55
cents a pound, and on December 15
was 60 cents. Practically irll other
job papers are about in accordance
destiny ratrbk eaxtty eynggPruted. TT
fa sufficient here to relate that the
Pilgrim colony was founded outside
the jurisdiction of the Loudon Virginia
company.
NEW STORY ABOUT PILGRIMS
Wrltara Claim Early Sattlara In Ameri
ca Wert Kidnaped From the
London Virginia Company.
Some historians, notably Azell Ames,
who has compiled ‘The Mayflower and
Her Log” from original sources, as
sert that the skipper of th£ Mayflower
was Capt. Thomas Jones, a rough
seadog who had led a more or less
piratical career on the high seas. Be
tween Capt. Jones and Sir Ferdinnndo
Gorges and doubtless Weston, they al
lege that a plot existed whereby the
Pilgrims were deliberately stolen from
the London Virginia company and
planted on territory outside of the Vir
ginia grant. The maneuvering about
Cape Cnd, according to this Interpre
tation, was simply a part of the plot
to discourage the Pilgrims from set
tling near the Hudson, ns evidently
they Intended when they left Holland.
The exact Identity of “Master Jones”
Is not clear. Historians of the Hassa-
rhnsettg iflstorlcat sod cry xay That the
skipper was one Christopher Jones, a
trustworthy man. entirely different
from Capt. Thomas Jones, who was
known to have a checkered career dur
ing Ids voyages to Virginia and other
colonies. The course of American
colonial history may have been grettly
changed when the Pilgrims encoun
tered the shoals ami unfavorable

recent advance of 25 cents? |K*r ream,
now quoted at $4.00 a ream . the last
quotation being $3.75, and the pre
war price being, we believe, about 70
cents.
There has been no decline in any
material entering into the printing
and publishing Business, and it is the
opinion of these making a study of
the situation that the previous low
levels may not be looked for any
time soon, if ever. -~^vr-
No paper, so far as we have learn
ed, has made any attempt to
duce its subscription price or adver
tising rates. The subscription of this
paper was not advanced with other
commodities, for the reason that in
creasing or decreasing a subscription
price is not without great difficulties,
and we preferred to take certain
losses than make any changes. And
we can see no possibility of any re
duction. In fact The Herald was
worth $2.00 a year long before the
increase was made, before the war,
for that matter, and would have been
> increased anyway.

THE UNIVERSAL CAR
X
Out of the more than 3,000,000 Ford cars now in use, about sixty per cent have been sold<to
farmers. Probably no other one thing has brought to^the farm somuch of comfort and profit as
has the Ford car. It has enlarged the social life, doubled the facilities for, marketing, brought
the town next d9or to the farm, multiplied for the farmer the pleasures of living, and by the
same token the Ford-Touring Car has brought just as much pleasure to the residents of the
towns and cities, because it is an every day in the year utility, answering the demand of quick
transportation at low expense. A family car without an equal in low cost of operation and
maintenance. We •solicit your order for one. We have the full line of Ford cars. We\arry the
genuine Ford Parts, and assure you the best in mechanical service and the most reasonable prices.
