Time to Call a Halt.
The various .^departments of our
State Kovernfnent will request the
* , . -
Legislature to appropriate over $9,-
000,000 to run the commonwealth
during 1921. This is about four times
the amount appropriated in 1916, just
four years ago, a levy of 6Vfe mills be-
inff sufficient to raise the money. The
appropriations climbed steadily dur
ing 1917, 1918, and 1919, making a
big jump in 1920. The Department
of Education will ask for as much
next year to run the schools alone as
was necessary to finance the entire
State government in 1919, when the
appropriation was $8,874,522.78.
The people are already burdened
with taxation, town, county, State
and national, and it would seem that
to further increase the burden at this
time, when the value of farm products
is way below the cost of production
and the people as a whole are facing
tremendous losses, would be little!
short of a crime. Governor Cooper is '
credited with the statement that he J
sees no way to cut the expense with
out crippling the work of the various

in the sense of not trying to improve
his condition but content after he has

love their country and their fellows
