headquarters in this city that a pre
liminary investigation by Its experts,
on the condition of the eotton crop up
to September 10, shows,that there has
been a deterioration of 10 per cent
since August 25. making the condition
of thn crop on September 10 as 57 per

The condition at present Indicates
a yield of about 225 pounds of lint
per acre and a total production of ap
proximately 1,295,000 bales—that is,
the final out turn will be larger or
smaller according as conditions here
after are etter or worse than the aver
age. Total production last year was
1,422,000 bales, while in 1918 it was
1,670,000 bales and 1,237,000 ales in
1917.
It will be observed that deteriora
tion during the past month is decided
ly greater where boll weevils are
numerous than in other sections, t
being particularly noticeable in Aiken
Barnwell.* Bamberg. Hampton. Collw
ton. Jasper. Beaufort. Charleston. Dor
chester. Berkeley and Orangeburg
counties
