Secretary Brearly Visits Jail* Chain Gang and Almshouse. League Leaders Only One Game A- head.—Blackville Here Friday. On June 22, Assistant Secretary Brearley, of the State Board of Pub lic Welfare, visited the Barnwell County Jail, the Chaingan# and the Almshouse, which institutions he found in very good condition. The jail scored 698 points out of a possible 1,000, the chaingang 723 and the alma- house 576. Ilis complete reports as submitted to-the Board are as follows: Barnwell County Jail. The condition of the Barnwell Coun ty jail remains satisfactory. The jailer is now having 1 the blankets washed very frequently and the floors scouretL once a week so that con ditions in, thr prisoners quarters have improved in two important respects. Kennedy, Jr. The marriage of Miss Kate Baxter Boylston, of Allendale to Mr. Quincey Adolphus Kennedy, Jr., o£ Williston, which took place at 6o’clock Wednes day evening at the Episcopal Church in Allendale, the Rev. A. Rufus Mor gan, of Chester, performing the cere mony, was of much interest to the many friends of the young couple in Barnwell and Allendale Counties. The food supplied is very he.”vy and hard for feeble old people to digest. Besides it is seldom well ccoked. The county should provide u central kitch en that could properly and economic ally prepare the food and a common dieting room where all could be served without waste. Some little repairing has been done since the last visit by a representative of this office, but the inmates still have to hang up matting and bed clothes to keep out the cold winds of winter. Before another cold season it is to be hoped that the cottages will be put in better condition. Barnwell County should Seriously consider the advisability of joining other counties in building a * district home that can more adequately and economically care for their depend ents. W'hen the game was resumed, Barnwell was retired without being able to score again. In the fifth in ning, one hit and several errors gave Bamberg the necessary score to win the game, the locals bei.ig unable to come from behind. The feature of the game was the pitching of both Smith and Summerlin, the former, however, having a little the better of the contest. July 2.—On June 30th r.( Healing Springs Baptist Church, near Blackville. a simple md beautiful wedding was solemnized when Miss Nellie R. Ray and Mr. Frank Roland Trowbridge, of Barnwell, were united jn marriage. The church was taste fully decorated with evergreens and flowers. As the wedding march was played by Mrs. Ruth Coggin, the bridal party entered in the following order: First, the ushers, Messrs Seymour Chvens and r.Iims Walker, followed by . the bride's maids, Misses Julia and Alice Ray, sisters ■ of the bride. Her mother before marriage was Miss Georgia Baxter of Sparta, and she is the grandaughter of Capt. R. B. Baxter of Sparta.
