the boll weevil was attacking the
young cotton in the Cope section of
Orangeburg county. He said that a
tenant on the farm of W. M. Hughe?
was in Orangeburg and reported that
the Insect was destroying the cotton
on the farms in that section. In some
places it was found that as many as
five out of six squares on a stalk of
cotton had been punctured.

Good Week ef Recruiting
Central recruiting office* for the
United States navy broke several
week’s records for the number-of
men accepted during the week, with
a total of 20 acceptances. Of this
number 14 were first enlistments, two
were previous service men and four
were transfers from the reserve to
the regular navy. Forty-eight men ap
plied for admission to the navy, all
being rejected because of physical
defects but 20.

Dr. Reavls to Resign
Dr. James Overton Reavls, pro
fessor of the English Bible and homile
tics at the Columbia Theological sem
inary, will offer his resignation from
the faculty of the institution at the
neyt meeting of- the board of directors
at noon June 29. Dr.^Reavis has ac
cepted a call as field secretary of for
eign missions of the Southern Presby
terian church. As such his duties will
be to travel about the country In the
Interest of foreign missions and pre
senting the work to the congregations
Gaffney.—According to A. B. Kirby
of the Kirby Seed company, of Gaff
■ey. more clover is being planted this
year than ever before by the farmers
of this county. According to the au
thorities at Clemson college, said M-.
Kirby, clover is recognized as a won
derful soil builder. It Is estimated
that the value of a crop of clover to
the land is from $40 to $60 to say
nc^hing of the hay which the land will
produce.
Keitt Scholarship Award
Appointments to the Lawrence M.
Keitt. scholarship, offered at the Uni-
veralty of South Carolina, will be
made by the university faculty, the
special scholarship 'committee having
charge of the drawing of the rules and
regulations to govern the appoint
ments. The first appointment for the
scholarship will be made to' some
student attending college next year.
