According to a report issued by B.
B, Hare, South Carolina Field Agent
of the Bureau of Crop Estimates,
United States Department of Agricul
ture, the condition of cotton in Barn
well, Allendale, Beaufort, Berkley,
Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester,
Hampton and Jasper Counties on May
25th was 70 per cent, of normal. T he
quantity of fertilizer per acre in these
counties is placed at 480 pounds, and
the vahie at $13.70 per arce. The con
dition of the crop in South Carolina
was 68 per cent, of normal, or 7 per
cent, below the ten-year average for
the corresponding date, 10 p#r cent,
below that of 1919 and 12 per cent be
low 1918. The average, for the United
States was 62.4 per cent.

that there has been a marked increase
m the volume of fertiliser used per
acre to cotton this year as compared

The May term of the Court of Gen
eral Sessions adjourned sine die on
Thursday. Although quite a number
plead guilty, there were very few con
victions in the cases that went to the
jury. ThO following is a list of the
cases disposed of since the last issue
of The People:
Josie C. Bunyan, rape, not guilty.
Dave Dyches, murder, not guilty.
Charlie Kirkland and Adam Jack-
son, larceny from the field, not guilty.
Arthur Porter was convicted of the
charge of malicious mischief and sen
tenced to pay a fine of $200 or serve
four months at hard labor.
Rush Dukes was convicted of dis.
posing of property under lien and sen
tenced to pay a fine of $250 or serve
six months at hard labor.

The meeting of the Barnwell Coun
ty Democratic Executive Committee,
held in the Court House here Friday
morning, was marked by a successful
effort on the part of some of the
Committeemen to take the office of
Supervisor and County Commissioners
out of the primary elections.
The meeting^ was called to order by-
Chairman Edgar A. Brown, who was
reelected, together with Capt. W. D.
Black as Vice-Chairman and B. P.
Davies Secretary*
It was moved, seconded and carried
that the time for filing pledges and
paying assessments close at 12
o’clock M., July 1st.

Magistrate O. J. C. Lain, of Olar,
forwarded his resignation to Gover
nor Cooper Saturday, to take effect
immediately. M,r- Lain had a few
days previously received an appoint
ment as game warden, succeeding J.
Crum Smoak, who resigned recently.
Mr. Lain will be game warden for the
county, or rather his special atten
tion will he given to game affairs in
Bamberg county, but his field of ac
tivity will not be confinel entirely to
this county.
Mr. Smoak was appointed game
warden in this county by Governor
Manning several years ago. Mr. Lain
has been magistrate at Olar for sev
eral terms, and in this capacity has
