The tabulation of premiums paid to
flpe insurance and fire and marine in
surance companies for the year 1919,
in South Carolina, just completed by
Insurance Commissioner McSwain,
shows the largest amounts of prem
iums ever paid in the history of the
state, making a grand total of $6,793,-
537. Of this the stock companies re
ceived 15,684,440 and the mutual com
panies, not including the mutual com
panies of South Carolina, received $!,•
109,097.
The total losses paid for the year
1919 were $2,054,581, or about 30.21
per cent of the premiums. This is a
favorable showing for the coutpenies.

•tmtement made by W. B. Hammett,
chief field deputy, whgtatvpanrlees the
collection of special taxes; which In
clude those on soda water drinks and
moving picture tickets.
“The law requires that the tickets
sold In moving picture theaters be
numbered consequently from 1 to 500,-
000,“ said Mr. Hamnjett. “Some of
the moving picture theaters are vio
lating this law, and we are giving in
structions to our deputys to pay ope-
cial attention to this source of reve
nue so that violations may be pre
vented.
As is well known, a war tax is add
ed to all tickets sold at the windows
at moving pictures and other theaters,
and a small tax is also added to soft
drinks sold at soda fountains. The
tickets sold are numbered consecutive
ly, and it is 1 y means of these num
bers that the number of tickets sold
can be checked up. The moYing pic
ture business in South Carolina has
increased rapidly during the past few
years and every day hundreds of peo
ple patronlxe these places of amuse
ment
