Washington.—The end, or the near
md, of the war has not stopped the
practice of scouting. There are scouts,
abroad In the country today, political
scouts in behalf of presidential can
didates of the two great parties seek
ing to determine “how the land lies.’’
There are several receptive if not
announced candidates for the nomina
tions now serving their country in the
legislative halls in Washington, or en
gaged in state, executive or business
pursuits elsewhere. Every one of
these men. if he would disclose the
contents of his dally mall hug, would

the letters. One and all of them are
getting reports from various sections
of the country, telling them what the
people think of them, what their
