We emerged through the companion,
and I stepped aside as the others
rushed by. Th^e was no shout, no
cheer, the fellows seeming to^ realize
the desperate nature of their work,
and the importance of surprise. They
were outnumbered five to one, and
their only hope of success lay in ren
dering their opponents helpless before
they could rally to a defense. All the
pent-up hate of years was In their
hearts, blazed madly In ' their eyes;
they were tigers leaping at the throat
of their prey, yet sane enough to com
prehend even In their blood-rage that
they must act together. It was over
so quickly I scarcely saw It all. My

Offices of the United States Employ
ment- service throughout the country,
which were abolished by the director
general, John B. Densmore, 'because
Congress had failed to appropriate
necessary funds for the continuance-
of the work, were reopened by an
order from Mr. Densmore revoking
his previous order. This action waa
taken after Congress had passed the
sundry civil bill carrying $400,000 for
the employment service.
The appropriation of $400,000 will
enable the service to continue for
two months and by this time it is be
lieved the * permanent employment
service hill now pending in both
houses will he passed In the mean
time the off.res will continue their
work as before, except they will be
supported entirely hy federal aid and

Recently Secretary Williams of th«
state board of charities and correc
tions, made an inspect on of the
South Carolina Children’s Home So;
ciety, and finds the society doing
much good work.
He says there is a general move
ment in the country toward the re
placing of orphanages by a system of
placing the children in homes at an
early age, so that they may become
used to home life and get in closer
touch with the real world. The op
ph&nages are becoming agents for
placing the children in tha best homes.

There was no answer although the

There waa a moment of deathly al*
lence. except for my counting. One
man uttered a cu.**e. and the JaniVif
figures at the foot of the ladder en*
deavored to work hack out of range,
yet. before I had spoken the word
eight guns were held aloft, and poked
up within reach, and at this sign of
surrender even the most desperate lost
heart and joined the more cowardly.
It was a strange collection of weapons
stacked on the deck—guns, cutlasses,
knives and pistols of every descrip
tion. Probably all had not been deliv
ered, yet I felt no further fear of the
few pieces remaining hidden.
“That’s all, Is it? Very well—now
take care of this big nigger we’re send
ing down; no, he is not dead, only
stunned. Now' stand aside while a few
of your friends join you; they’ll tell
you what’s up. Make room there.”
We passed the forecastle scum down
one by one. Ignoring the indignant
roar of voices which greeted my or
der, I watched the men shift the heavy
hatch cover into place, and then per
mitted my eyes to survey thje deck, as
