Who Pays for Advertising?

One of the old, old arguments
against advertising is that the con
sumer has to pay for it because the
merchant adds on the cost
And yet there has never been any
explanation of the fact that the really
successful merchants are the heaviest
advertisers and that advertiesed pro
ducts are the ones most in demand.
On the same theory a Tot of dealers
are shy about stocking up on articles
that are heavily advertised for the
reason that they think these articles
cost them more because the manu
facturer has added on the cost of ad
vertising.
Advertising pays for itself.
And it does not take an elaborate
argument to prove it. Take the case
of some product which is nationally
advertised. In the language of an ad
vertising expert, this big national ad
vertising campaign creates for the
product consumer acceptance and al
so consumer demand. As an expert
goes on to make clear in a recent ad
dress, then, in order to supply this de
mand the manufacturer is forced un
der the same overhead expense vir
tually. with a system well orgaatsed
to turn out upon the market a greater
number of products Therefore, he
getf the economy of quantity produc

the Bank of Dunbarton, for the finan
cial support they gave for this pro
ject. To all the folks who took part
in the program and made it go; to
Mr. W. H. Duncan, who made it pos
sible for us to obtain the use of the
Court House and had it cleaned up for
these particular dates, who made it
possible for free moving pictures for
the girjs on Thursday night, who to
gether with Mr. Woodward, loaned
the lumber to provide a table in “The
Circle/’ who gave the members of
our clubs an unexpected treat of ice
cream from the drug store and who
did many other much appreciated
things to make this undertaking a
success. To Mr. Ed Woodward for
the use of his moving picture theatre
on two occasions; To Dr. Mace and
Mr.* Jack Hammett for the service in
running the government films on Fri
day afternoon; to. the folks who
brought their cars and helped to get
the girla to their assigned homes on
Wednesday; to all those who helped to
take the girls to ride on Thursday af
ternoon; to -Mr. U. D. Calhoun for the
nice souvenirs he gave the girls; to
Miss Elisabeth Burrkhalter for making
the tea that was served one after
noon; to lira. W. C. Milhous, Mr.
Lonnie Calhoun. Mr*. H. D. Calhoun,
Mrs Josephine Woodward. Mrs. E. R
Call, lira. Julia B Easterling and to
the Elko school for materials and

Report of Third Annual Short Courar
Held at Barnwell.
June 25 to 27 inclusive were the
dates set for the annual gathering of
the members of the various Home
Demonstration Clubs of Barnwell and
Allendale Counties. In spite of the
unfavorable weather conditiona, 104
club members attended the course.
The program as carried out varied
very little from the printed program
as it appeared in the county papers a
few weeks past. Our very efficient
helpers in conducting this Short
Course were Miss Laura W. Bailey,
Assistant State Home Demonstration
Agent with headquarters at Winthrop
College, Rock Hill, S. C.; Miss Mary
Burwell Martin, of Orangeburg, Dis
trict Agent in charge of 15 counties;
Miss Emma Jane Yarn, Colleton Coun
ty Home Demonstration Agent; Dr.
W. M. Jones, pastor of the Barnwell
Baptist Church, Rev. L. E. Peeler,
pastor of the Barnwell Methodist
