Orangeburg, May 30>—Auto races
were held this afternoon at the Or- I
angeburg County fair grounds before ;
1,000 people. They proved very inter- J
estirtg as several of the races were
close. The one-mile was won by E. L.
Merion, in 1 minute, 20 and 2-5th sec- j
dnds in a Packard; the 5-mile, race !
was also w r on by E. L, Merion in 6 \
minutes, 55 seconds; Reynolds in an
Oakland was second in this race; Be
thea, of Barnwell, ip a Chalmers won
the 10-mile face in 1^ minutes, 2 1-5
seconds, E.' L. Merino being second;
Bethea also won the 20-mile race in 29
minutes, 11 1-5 seconds, Burkett in a
National being second and Wilds in a
Hudson third.
Reynolds had the misfortune to run
a wheel off in th6 20-mile race and had
to quit, but was not hurt. Bethea
also ran a wheel off in the 1-mile race,
but got another wheel. His driving
w r as the outstanding feature of the af
ternoon. Other entrants in the race
were Edens in a ChaJmers; Brown in
a Hudson; Sid Schuley, a local man, in
a Nash.

still and a quantity of beer near Ash
ley Station Tuesday and arrested and
placed in jail two white men, C. S.
Sulshee and E McKinney

Miss Bertie Wells, of Williston, who
was recently appointed truant officer
for Barnwell County by the State
Board of Education under the com
pulsory education law, was in the city
Monday to enter upon her duties. The
Board directed the appointment of 55
of these officers, 37 counties receiving

one each and nine counties two each.
Among the 49 attendance officers al
ready selected, it is interesting to
note that 11 women have been ap-
pointed in 11 different counties.
During the month of June each
attendance officer should be busy learq
ing the boundaries of the school dis
tricts of the county, the location of
school houses, the enrollment of pu
pils in the various schools and es
penally in securing from teachers the
annual enrollment list of all^children
attending school. The records and
data in county superintendents’ .offi
ces w’ill be of gread assistance to at
tendance officers in their work.
During the month of July and Au
gust a census by school districts must
be taken of all children between the
ages of 6 and 14 years. Plans for the
census must be arranged. The co
operation of trustees, patrons, teach
ers and pupils will he needed, and all
preliminaries should be thoroughly
discussed with the county superin
tendent and with the county board of
education. The compulsory attend
ance law prescribes definitely the du
ties of the attendance officers and the
State board of education has instruct
ed the State superintendent to pre
pare and distribute census cards.
These materials will he forwarded

Mr. A. A. Lemon, of Barnwell^has
been appointed by Governor Cooper^pn
the commission to apportion the in
debtedness of. Barnwell and Hampton
Counties among Barnwpll, Hampton
and Allendale Counties, vice Capt. J.
B. Armstrong, county treasurer, who
was unable to accept the appointment
because of an opinion by Attorney
General Wolff that he would be hold
ing two offices, which Is forbidden by
the Constitution. The Governor has
made no mistake in selecting Mr. Lem
on who, in addition to being an qxpert
accountant, is a conscientious, high-
toned gentleman. .
