NUMBER 39. apood Progress Made in General Sessions «-> • • • Tf Cases Disposed of During Past Week. —List of True Bills. Fairly good progress has been made in the trial of criminal cases at the present term of the Court of General ^Sessions during the past week. Since the last issue of The People the fol lowing cases have been disposed of: In the case of John Matheny, et al., charged with disturbing religious wor ship and carrying concealed weapons, Lula Scott, one of the defendants, was ^convicted -of* disturbing public wor ship and fined $75 or 60 days, and all the other defendants were found guil ty of the first and second counts of the indictment and$ sentenced to pay a fine of $125 each or serve three months at hard labor. John Hart was acquitted of the charge of larceny from the field. In the case of Daniel Myers and Otis Duncan, charged with assault with intent to kill and carrying concealed weapons, Myers was found guilty of aggravated assault and carrying con cealed weapons, and was sentenced to pay a fine of $300 or serve at hard labor; Duncan was convicted of aggravated assault and given a like jwtence. In my announcement for the Senate I stated that if elected I would represent the whole people, and that I was not backed by any clique, clan 6r faction. I reiterate this now, and state that any report to the contrary*, circulated by any candidate or his supporters, ia untrue. I am run ning I wcause I can render. 1 believe better service to the County*, than either of the gentlemen who are opposing me. 1 am running because it ia my ambition to serve the people as their representa tive in the Senate of South Carolina. I believe that no people can be a great people, no County a great and prosperous County, no country a great country, that is not united in its efforts for the common good. What ia the situation in Ra margil County? Mr. Kennedy ia trying to ride into office as the cahdidate of one side of the County, and Mr. I hi vis ia try*ing to quit one job and ask the people for another, because be happened to oppose in the Legislature, something that one side of the County wanted. How can we hope to get together and build good roads, the crying need for which are see around us every day; bow can we build bigger schools and better schools, as long as the County is divided? 1 appeal to the com mon sense of the people of the County to get together and elect aa their Senator a man who will do something for the County as a whole; one who will know no section or faction when It cofnes to working for the common good of the people. Some of Mr. Kennedy's supporters seem to think that if elected Mr. Kennedy can take the Court House in a weel harrow and move it wherever he pleases. Others seem to think, or Mr. Davis would have them believe, that it is necessary* to^lect Mr. Pavia to the Senate to keep this from be ing done. God save the mark' Can the people be fooled, all of them, all the time? Mr. Kennedy can no more go to the Senate and move the C ourt House than he can make the waters of Turkey Creek run up stream. On the other hand. Mr. Davit has lived in Ramwell for nigh unto forty years, and the people have never elected him Senator, and the Court ^Jouse is still in Ramw*ell. on the same spot where it was built. What is all this talk for? ISSUES—something for each of them to get behind and ride into office, without giving the people a chance to give them the M once over" to size their general qualifications for the office to which they seek election. * Do you believe that the best interest of the people of the County will be best served by elect ing either Mr. Kennedy or Mr. Davis? it n),n. wmU wffi Double Killing in Allendale County Jr _ . J. W Hogg Killed by S. D. Msrley, Who Was Alio Shot to Death. Allendale, May 29.--J. W. Hogg, one of Allendale County's largest and most prominent farmers, residing near Allendale, and S. D. Marley, of Co hen’s Bluff, Allendale County, shot each other to death at the latter's home this afternoon, about 4 o’clock, both dying almost immediately. Only meagre details are obtainable _ tonight, but reports say that Hogg, accompanied by a man named Lewis, went to the Marley House. Marley’a dog bit Hogg and Hogg shot the dog. Mprley then opened fire on Hogg with an automatic shoWgun loaded with buckshot. Hogg fell mortally wound ed but drew his pistol and shot Marley to death as the latter was running away. The buckshot inflicted a horri ble wound in Hogg’s chest. Marley was shot four times. Hogg, who ia survived by his wife and three child ren, is from one of the most prominent families of this section. Marley ia unmarried. Inquests, it is understood, will be held tomorrow. An inquest into the death of J. C. Harley, who died from wounds receiv ed in a grocery store duel here last Saturday, night between Harley and Green'Williams, will be held tomorrow morning. Street rumor is to the effect that startling developments will ho brought out at the inquest. Jim Hogg and Bud Lewis, whose home is on the Georgii side of the river near Brier Creek went down to the home of H. D. Mar ley, about three-quarters of a mill from Cohen’s Bluff,-to pay a visit.
