South Carolina will be exported to
raise $24,948,000 in the Victdty loan.
The State’s quota in the Fourth Lib
erty loan waa $32,425,000, or one-third
in excess of the present quota.
FLke counties will be expected to
raise amounts in excess of £1,000,000.
Charleston holds first place by a wide
margin with a quota of $4,891,400.
Richland stands next with *3,507.000.
To Greenville wiR be apportioned $1,-
715,000; Spartanburg, $1,358,800. and

Hamilton Carhartt Helps Out City of
Rock Hill On Her Quota to Amount

Rock Hill.—V. B. McFadden, for sev
eral yeans postmaster at Rock Hill,
has resigned, his resignation to be
come effective July 1. The civil serv
ice commission has arranged an exam
ination to choose Mr. McFadden’s suc
cessor to be held in the near future.
Because of the president’s executive
order of 1917 placing all postmasters
under civil service rules. Representa
tive Stevenson will not be able to
name Mr. McFadden’s successor,
which was formerly the custom. The
office pays $2,800 s year.

At the meeting to welcome home the
negro soldiers Mayor Jennings in his
address referred to the desirability of
the negroes of Sumter county organiz
ing a county fair association and sug
gested that they take up the matter at
once. -Ft was in consequence of this
suggestion that the preliminary steps
were taken.

Spartanburg. The State highway
commission in cooperation with the
Spartanburg county board of commis
sioners is sending to Secretary D. A.
Houston a project to build with fed
eral aid 1.9 miles,of asphaltic concrete
road, beginning at the city limits of
Spartanburg and ending at the pork
! of the roads at the Bobo place.
This stretch of the road is part of
the main highway from Spartanburg
to Union and Columbia, known as the
Appalachian highway.
