The first session of the seventy-third
general assembly was concluded at
7:25 o’clock Sunday morning, when
the house adjournec). The senate ad
journed at 7:14.
Throughout the lust day both houses
had time hanging heavHy over them.
Many bills were ratified. Free confer
ence reports ou all amended measures
which were in contest were occupying
much of the attention of \pth bodies.
Several hills of Statewide import
ance were acted upon on thejfinal day
of the session.
The house accepted the * senate's
amendments to the bill to regulate the
sale of tonics and bitters with suffi
cient alcoholic content to be used as
beverages. -

Meeting. State Board Education.
Governor Cooper has called, the
State hoard of education to meet in
his office March 21. This will be the
" "’- l
initial meeting of the hoard under his
administration.
The constitution makes the gover
nor ex-oflfioij) chairman and the State
superintendent ex-officio secretary of
the State hoard. It also provided for
the appointment by the governor of
the other members, who shall serve
for a term of four vears. The present
board appointed t in April. 1916,
and w'ill hold until April. 1920. Kx-
Governor Manning, in selecting and
appointing^the hoard, chose an entire
ly new man from each of the sev£n.
congressional districts. The ap
pointive members now are. J. M, Nath
ans. Charleston.'first district; W. Jay
McGarity, Aiken, second district; S.
J. Derrick, Newberry, third district;
Dr. H. N. Snyder. Spartanburg, fourth
district; K.- A. ^ Montgomery, BlaskA-
burg. fifth district; \V, L* Booker.
Florence, sixth district'; S. H. ?:d-
muuds, Sumter, seventh district.
Among the important matters to be
considered by the State hoard at this
meeting are the appointment of the
several county hoards of education, ar
rangements for the regular teachers’
examination, cohsideration of public
school appropriations and of new
school legislation, settlement of tui
tion and scholarship appeals and the
formation of whatever plans may
seetff advisable for the betterment of
the schools.

ent of education, ex-officio, together
