Benjamin F. Fanning, 29 year old ♦,*
Barnwell County farmer, was convict
ed in the United States court yester
day on the charge “That he purposely
wounded himself to disqualify him for
.. military service.”.
The government examined a num
ber of witnesses in an endeavor to !
weave a strong chain of circumstan- '
tial evidence against the defendant. !
Witnesses testified that Fanning was :
examined for army service on June
14, 1918, and the morning of June 17
the defendant was handed his notice
to report to the local board at 9 a. m.
i June 24 to go to Camp Jacksqn. On
the afternoon of June 17 after, the
notice to report had been received the
defendant was injured by the dis
charge from a single-barreled gun. On
fune 19 he was seen with his right
I hand bandaged. He was taken to Camp
Jackson on June 24, and on the fol
lowing day was admitted to the base
hospital. A government witness told
the jury that Fanning had told him he
shot himself purposely.
Three physicians, Dr. Briggs, Dr.
Cone and Surgeon Stone, who was in
charge of the surgery at the base hos
pital at the time Fanning was admit
ted and treated, testified in the case.
Surgeon Stone and Dr. Briggs ex
pressed the opinion that the wounds
carried by Fanning could no t have
been inflicted in an ordinary manner.
Dr. Briggs said the defendant told
him he was dragging the gun over a
log with his right fingers over the
The defendant said he was 29 years
old and resided in Barnwell County
with his mother. He was a farmer
and carpenter. He registered with
the Local Board at Barnwell and was
placed in Class C. Later he was re
assigned to Class 1. On the after
noon of June 17 he went out to shoot
birds with a single-barreled gun. He
fired at a flying bird and it dropped to j
the ground. He started toward the
place where the bir d had fell and
stepped on a log. He stumbled and
'fell and the gun was discharged. The
load tore away about one-half of the
index and second finger on the right
hand. Dr. Cope dressed the wounds.
He did not remember the exact posi
tion of the gun when it fired.
The district attorney made a power
ful appeal to the jury on behalf of the
prosecution and J. H. Cooper made
an able address for the defenaant. The
jury returned the veraict of guilty
after a brief deliberation , Judge
Stfiith will pronounce sentence later.

B. F. Fanning Gets Year for Shooting
Off Two Fingers. / <
Columbia, Jan. 24.—B. F. Fanning,
of Barnwell Coupty, was sentenced
in United States court here today to
serve one year in the federal prison
at Atlanta after coriviction on a
charge of shooting off two of his fin
gers to escape military service.

On Thursday night, Jan. 23rd, 1919,
at 8 o'clock the Angel of Death visit- |
cd the home of John G. Matthews of <
Blackville, and bore away his beloved
wife, Sara Vaughan.
She is survived by her husband, J.
G.Matthews, little son, John Jr„ aged
four and a half years; little step
daughter, Sara, aged 7 years; also by
her mother, Mrs. Della Vaughan, of ,
Crews, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. J. W.
Harding, of Crews, Va., and Mrs. L.
P. Boyiston, of Healing Springs; and
one brother, Mr. Jos, Vaughan, of
Crews, Va., and a host of relatives
and friends. The^ funeral services
were held at the Blackville Cemetery
Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock.

Making Whiskey in Crude Outfit* Ap
pears to Be Spreading Over
State.
The federal court calendar is croupd-
ed with charges against white mm
and negroes, alleged owners and op
erators of stills. . Judge Smith/amid
yesterday that the practice of making
whiskey in crude outfits appears to h*
spreading like wild fire. An attor
ney from the lower section of the State
said 19 defendants from his territory
were due to be tried on the charge
and the majority would plead gufltp.
Alfred Hill, Barnwell County fanner,
was given a jury trial yesterday morn
ing in the United States court on the
charge of having a still in his poe-
session. The jury returned a verdict
of guilty. Sheriff Morris and his dep
uty testified that they raided the
premises of Hill in July, 1918. lltoy
located a smoked lard can iq a boggy
shed. Two barrels filled with mnA,
syrup and corn were found in another
building about 200 yards from the
homfc.. The barrels contained abot
65 gallons of the mixture. The can
in the buggy house smelled as if it
had contained mash. The def<
told the officers he did not know as
thing about the outfit.

that his machine had been stolen from
the 1300 block of Sumter Street. Mes
sages were sent out to various towns
and cities and the car was described.
McCann landed in Blackville yester
day, according to the Blackville Mag
istrate, and was caught stealing fear
automobile tires. He was taken m
charge and when the car he was driv
ing was examined, it developed that 1$
fitted the description given by the Qp-
lumbia police. The magistrate said
the negro claimed he swapped cam m
Columbia leaving an old car and tak
ing the good machine.
It appears that the negro McCaaa
has traveled extensively. He carried
mail on his person which indicated
that he had recently been in T«
Mr. Heywaro was
had been recovered and he has re
quested that the Blackville Magistrate
engage some one to bring the machine
to Columbia at his expense.
McCann will be prosecuted in Black*
ville on the charge of grand
