Farmers of Blackville Enjoy Splendid
Prospects.
Blackville, Dec. 22.—The cotton
crop around Blackville this season was
very good and the farmers are in bet
ter shape than ever before. A MSt of
cotton is being held.. Every available
warehouse is filled and large lots have
been shipped to city warehouses.
Many improvements in country
property in the way of building, are
going on, since the war restraint as
to building has been removed.
The farmers were late in getting
in their grain crop on account of the
influenza situation, but unusually
large acreages have been put in and
the weather has been very favorable
for it and the prospects now are for
a big crop of oats and wheat.
Barnwell County’s Honor Roll.
(CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK.)
ON WAY TO BLACKVILLE.
Lieuts. Groves and Lewis Spend a Few
Hours in Charleston.
Lieut. M. M. Groves and Lieut. H. F.
Lewis, dental corps, United States
navy, stationed at the Pensacola air
station, were in Charleston yesterday
for a few hours on their way to Black
ville, where they will spend the Christ-
>nas holidays. These young naval of
ficers gave up a splendid and growing
dental business in Charleston in order
to devote their professional services
to ^heir country in a time of national
emergency, and their friends are justly
proud of the record they have a-
chievod. When they are honorably
dischargecf from the naval service both
of them intend to resume the practice
of their profession.—News and Cour
ier, Dec. 22.
A Very Sad Death.
The people of Barnwell were pro
foundly shocked and saddened Mon
day morning to hear of the death of
little Martha Riley, the four-year old
daughter of Auditor R. W. Riley,
which occurred at her father’s home
after a short illness of diphtheria. The
little girl had been sick only about
two days. Her body was laid to rest
Monday afternoon at five o’clock in
the Barnwell Baptist Churchyard, the
Rev. L. E. Peeler, pastor of the Meth
odist Church, conducting the funeral
services. The bereaved family have
the sincere sympathy of many friends.
Mr. H. W. Deer, of Ulmer, was a
caller at The People office Monday.
