man reichatag criticiaea the Imperial
German Government, the news ii
hailed with delight tn America and
other allied countries as tending to
show disaffection and lack of morale
among the people behind the fighting
lines. The Imperial German Govern
ment has persistently tried to impress
its people with the fact that the Unit
ed States are not whole-heartedly in
the war and no doubt, with its far-
flung spy system, pounces upon the
utterances of every man in public
life in this country which in the least
smacks of disloyalty to the allied
cause and serves them up to its peo
ple as proof that we are in the war
because President Wilson drove us
there.

fairs from an economical standpoint

patriotism <or rather lack of patriot
ism I of our farmers. In ordinary
times they may be able to buy com,
etc., cheaper than they can produce
it at home (though we doubt it), but
we are now living under extraordinary
conditions and the time may come
when their cotton money cannot buy
food for man and beast in sufficient
quantities. Remember, the govern
ment warned the South months ago
that unless it raised its own supplies,
somebody was going a-begging dur
ing the next few months.
“We cannot see where it is the bus
iness of any of the candidates as to
whom the other candidates are go
ing to vote for and how it affects
their fitness for the office. It is no
test of their loyalty to the govern

The Barnwell Red Cross Chapter
extends its sincere thanks to Messrs.
Lemon Brothers for giving it a home
since the first of the year in the front
part of the second story of their store
building, much to the inconvenience
of the firm, we fear. “We were home
less and ye took us in.” That was
true Red Cross spirit. Like all good
works, this has borne good fruit by
the stockholders and renters of the
Masonic Hall, which is being cleaned
and made ready for the Chapter to
move in this week This will be the
reception room for every Red Croee
worker in the town and county. It
is YOUR room and the ladle# who
will be appointed to keep it open will

Whereas, our beloved brother and
faithful co-worker, Rev. W. L. Hayes,
has been called from earth to his
heavenly home, we, the members of
the 2nd Division Union of the Barn
well Association, shall, therefore, sad
ly miss him and his service in our
Union Meetings. In his death we lose
one of our most useful ministers. He
was always ready to serve in any place
he could, but when we think of him
we remember that our loss is his gain.
