Modern Little City.
Fairfax, June 10.—From a country
Tillage with total banking deposits
of between $30,000 and $36,000 five
years ago, Fairfax, S. C., is a modem
liitle city today with total deposits in
Ha two banks aggregating approxi-
mately $500,000. Just what is res-
ponsible for this phenomenal growth,
coul^pot be stated with leftnitene/s,
but ft is enough to state the fact that
Fairfax has made wonderful progress
in late years and is still on the up
ward grade.
Situated on two railroads, the Char
leston and Western Carolina and the
Seaboard Air Line, this town enjoys
splendid transportation facilities,
which, with its prosperous farming
from which to draw trade, is
itly attracting new business in-
its. During the past year, its
district has been enlarged by
addition of eight new brick

a local corporation, of which Hr. J. K
Johnston is tho president. Mr. John
ston is also president of the Citizens'
Bank. Judge J. E. Puerifoy is pres
ident of the First National Bank.
The prosperity and civil pride of
the community are reflected in the
splendid type of churches. The Bap
tists several years ago abandoned a
little wooden shack, in which they had
•» worshipping, and today they oc
cupy an imposing brick building. The
Methodists and Lutherans also have
creditable houses of worship.
Fairfax invested splendidly in the
third Liberty Loan, exceeding its
quota of $27,400 by $11,100; and like
its sister cities has given liberally to
the Red Cross, Y. M. C. A. and similar
organizations which have-appealed to
them.
