Beldock, May 24.—The latter part
ef Jane, 1917, 23 citizens of the Gil
lette community applied for permis
sion to form a unit of the Augu»ta
Red Cross Chapter. About the time
these papers arrived it was learned
that Barnwell Chapter had been or
ganized. Moved both from a sense
of loyalty to our own State and coun
ty and because of the greater conven-
itnee also, application was then made
to Barnwell Chapter for necessary pa
pers and information to organize.
Because of their newness in the
work and the great amount of red
tape, it was not until Sept, the 25th
that the Beldock Branch Chapter was
formally organised.
On Friday evening. Sept, the 28th.
Dr. Josiah Morse, State Director of

The entire membership at Beldock
appreciated the fine spirit of cooper
ation and helpfulness and no matter
where our lines may fall we will have
e warm spot in our hearts for Bam
well Chapter as we knew it Present
at the meeting of March 28th were
Rev. and Mrs. Dibble, and Mrs. Pearls
tine, who personally invited and wel
comed the Beldock Branch into Allen
dale Chapter. This act of courtesy
on the part of Mr. Dibble and Mrs.
Pearlstine was appreciated and had
much to do with securing a unani
mous vote for the transfer of our
membership to Allendale.
A committee has been appointed to
organize the Junior Red Cross but has
made no report yet on its work. Plans
are also under way to get a speaker
to viait the six or seven negro church
es in our territory and thereby en
roll every negro in the Red Cross.
Some work has already been done
along this line, there being already
thirty-six colored members in our
Branch.
The following is a financial record
of our work as taken from the Treas
urer’s book: From Sept 25, 1917, to
May 3, 1918, raised by donations and
entertainments $228.05; 80 annual
members, 8 subscribing members and
1 Junior member. These are r.ow on

Though the Fairfax Rod Cross
Branch is as yet a mem infant, they
haven’t been quits idle. The days slip
rapidly by and the temptation is great
to lay aside all work and go joy riding
and do numerous other things that
tempt pleasure lovers these ideal'
spring days, but be it recorded to the
credit of the chapter that sixty arti
cles have been sent in, consisting of
psjatna suits, bed shirts, sweaters,'
wristlets, bath robes and wash clothes,
the robe and nine wash clothes hav
ing been contributed by the U. D. C.'s
F. M. Young Co., very generously gave*
the Daughters a bolt of homespun,
this is being made up Into bed shir^
and will in turn be given to the Red
Cross. The last allotment of gar
ments, with the exception of the
sweaters have been completed, nine
bed shirts, nine suits of pajamas, and
carried to headquarters.
After the close of school and the
measles have sold a fare-thee-well to
the children, the Branch has hopes of
doing oodles of sewing and many other
useful and beautiful things especially
for the Red Croee. While the Branch
hasn't yet giveq an entertainment di

BlackviUe, May 26.-The Blackville
Red Cross auxiliary has organised a
surgical dressings class under the di
rection of Mrs. Wilson, of Allendale.
The members are progressing rapidly
and all are greatly interested in the
work. The supply committee has re
cently taken a number of articles to
Barnwell. Much interest is being tak
en in all war relief work. The regular
business meeting of the auxiliary will
be held the last Thursday in the
month.
