The Local Board was in session here
for several- hours Friday, disposing
of a number of matters of importance.
Mr. and Mrs. John F. Weekley, of
Ulmer, were the guests of Mr. and
Mrs. J. B. Morris, Jr., one day last
week.
The closing exercises of the Spring
Branch school were held on the even
ing of May 2nd, an excellent program
being rendered.

was laid to rest in the town cemetery
on Saturday moThing amid a large
crowd of sorrowing relatives and
friends.
Mrs. J. T. Causey and Mrs. Rosa
Garvin, of Estill, visited relatives in
Fairfax Sunday and Monday.
Mrs. W. P. Hogarth, of Beaufort,
spent Sunday with relatives here.
Mr. and Mrs. Miles Riley, of Bright
on, paid a short visit here Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Youmans, of
Richmond, Va., are spending the week
in tow nwith relatives.
There are still numerous cases of
measles in town.
Miss Lillian Bessinger, of Dade City,
Fla., is spending some time here, and
intends going on to the mountains of
North Carolina for the summer.
Mrs. U. S. Bowman left Tuesday for
her home in Crystal River, Fla. Mr.

man in. when you and I have stopped trying,

Negro Accoeed of Attempted Aexxutt
Electrocuted.
Columbim, Mxy 10.—Will Ferguson,
the negro who was convicted at Barn
well recently for alleged attempted
assault on a white woman at Allen
dale on April 14, was electrocuted at
the State Penitentiary this morning
at 11:25 o'clock. Ferguson died with
out making a statement

R. H. Walker Dead.
Allendale, May 10.—Mr. R. H. Walk-
.er, a prominent planter and merchant
of Appleton, died Monday at his home
after a long illness, in the seventieth
year of his age. He was identified
with the business interests of that
section.. At one time he represented
Barnwell in the Legislature and was
recognized as a leader in his neigh
borhood. He was a member of the
Baptist Church, and of the order of
Knights of Pythias. He was true to
his friends and just in all his business
relations. He leaves a wife, one son,
Ralph Walker, and one daughter, Mrs.
Julian Guess. He was buried at Mount
Arnold churchyard Wednesday in the
presence of a large number of his rela
tives and friends.
EXCITEMENT IN COLLETON
Chain Gang Trusty Attempt* to As
sault White Woman.
Walterboro, May 11.—Great excite
ment was caused here last night by an
attempted assault upon a well-known
white woman by Sam Holman, a negro
trusty of the chain gang. The alleged
attempt occurred about 11 o'clock last
night, and while the negro failed of
his purpos^. the woman is badly
bruised and'ftuger prints are on her
throat where ner assailant attempted
to choke her. Holman has been on the
chain gang for two years and bore
such an excellent record that Commis
sioner Ulmer made him a trusty.
He went to the woman's home last
night, it is alleged, under pretext of
borrowing a buggy for Mr. Ulmer.
When the lady,, whose husband was ab
sent from home, went out, he caught
her saying it was she that he wanted.
She broke loose and ran. The negro
ran after her, caught her, dragged her
back almost to her home, and then
became frightened and ran away. A
posse was quickly formed by the sher
iff and chief of police and blood
hounds were called from Branchville,
but they could not take the trail and
the negro is still at Urge. Had he
