tion heretofore had. having been only
temporary. Although this meeting
had been thoroughly advertised and
the weather was as warm as spring,
only about twenty five members were
present. While few in number, the
meeting was a success from every
standpoint.
In the absence of the temporary
Chairman, Mr. E. A. Brown, the meet
ing was called to order by Mr. P. M.
Buckingham and a letter addressed
to him as Treasurer by Mr. E. A.
Brown was read declining re-election,
his duties being such that he could not
give the work proper attention. Mr.
H. L. O’Bannon was asked to act as

temporary Chairman and Mrs. G. M.
Greene as temporary Secretary.
The By-Laws of the American Na
tional Red Cross were then read and
adopted as the By-Laws of the Barn
well County Red Cross Chapter.
The next matter to come up for at
tention was the election of the Exe
cutive Committee, which was to be
composed of seven members, togeth
er wjth the Chairman, Secretary and
Treasurer who are to be ex-officio
members of the Executive Committee.

paid by Baldoc for supplies, sale of
insignia, and from the War Fund in
Washington, $1,889.07, while the ex
penditures, by way of expense of War
Fund, Christmas membership cam
paign, fixing work room and furni
ture, stationery, printing, postage,
purchase of insignia, purchase of sup
plies for military relief, and amount
(remitted to headquarters for their
pro rata of dues, $1,551.84, leaving a
balance on hand of $337.23. J feel
sure that this report will be of inter
est to the members, very few of whom
have ever realized that there was a fi
nancial side to be considered.
Mrs. Lena Davies, Chairman of the
temporary Supply Committee, was
then called on for an outline of dhe
work done by her committee and she
made quite an interesting and patri
otic talk, showing that her committee
had been zealdus in their efforts and
had accomplished quite a lot of work
for the benefit and comfort of the sol
diers at the front. After which the
meeting was adjourned and the Exe
cutive Committee was immediately
called to order for the purpose of
electing officers for the ensuing year,
Mr. L. P. Wilson, Cashier of the Barn
well Banking Company, was elected
Chairman, Mra. W. M. Andrews, for

tion and Miss Pauline Richardson was
elected in her stead; Mrs. G. M: Greene

Dr. and Mrs. Ryan A. Gyles, of
Blackville, have gone to Florida for
the doctor to recuperate from a re
cent attack of grip.
Mr. W* L Johns, of Baldock, and
Dr. D. K. Briggs, of Blackville, at
tended a meeting of the Local Board
here Monday morning.
The income tax collector is in the
city this week. He has headquarters
at the Home Bank and invites all who
are so fortunate as to be in this class
to pay him a visit.
The Snelling Mercantile Company,
of Snelling, has been chartered with a
capital stock of $8 000. The officers
are: 0. D. Moore, presiden-t, P. W.
Patterson, vice-president; R. R.
Moore, secretary and treasurer.

the Methodist. -Church next Sunday
morning at 11:15 o’clock in memory
of Capt. George H. Bates. Dr. W. W.

The People is a little late this week,
due to the fact that the office was
closed Monday in compliance with the
fuel administrator's order. While
this is an inconvenience, R is a very
small sacrifice compared to what oth
ers are being called upon to make.

a stockholders meeting for the pur
pose of winding up its affairs, and to
dissolve the said corporation, at the
office of A. H. Ninestein, at Black
ville, S. C., on the 2nd day of March,
1918, at 10 o’clock, in the forenoon.

will retain the right given it by law,
to prosecute cr to defend suits against
it, (if any) and to enable the said
psrporation to settle and close its af
fairs, by way of collection or payment
