Eight Others Injured, the Most Seri-
’ pusly Hurt Being Carried to
Columbia.
Two men lost their lives and eight
others were more or less seriously in
jured at the Main Street crossing of
the Southern Railway in Barnwell
Thursday morning, when Southern
train No. 35 crashed into the county’s
big automobile truck, which was load-
ed with thirteen men, who were being
( carried to camp east of the city. The
dead aro: T. W. Black, foreman of
the county chaingang, and Willie Ray-
sor, a negro convict, both of whom
died while being carried to Columbia
for medical attention. The injured
are: B. R. Goss, white, driver of the
truck, broken arm; Zeke Mathis, white,
chaingang guard, hip injured; Jack
! Green?, white, chaingang guard, in-
' jured about head and body; Charlie
Taylor, of Sycamore, negro convict,
injured about head and body; Inell
Johnson, of AUendrle, negro convict,
broken collarbone; Willie Bradley, of
Ulmer, negro convict, injured about
face and neck; Quince Halt, of Willia-
ton, negro convict, injured on the head;
1 sad ore Jones, of Williston, injured in
leg. Jim Miller. S&m Taylor and Hey
ward Wicker, all negro conricta, of
BlackviUe escaped without injury. The
big two too truck was damaged con
siderably as was the cow-catcher on
the locomotive

Notice ia hereby given that
suant to an act of the General
bly of the State of South Carolina
approved on the first day of March.
A. D., 1917, an election will be held
in and for the Countv of Barnwell In
said State, on Tuesday, the 28th of
August, A. D., 1917, at which elec
tion the question of establishing a
county court for said county will bo
submitted to the qualified electors of
said county. t ‘
, No person shall be entitled to vote
at said election unless it appears; (a)
That fW has been duly registered, a
production of his registration certi
ficate will be sufficient proof as to his
laving been registered.
(b). He must have paid his taxes
including poll) collectible during the
irevious year. The production of his
tax receipt from the officer authorized
to collect such taxes shall be conclus
ive proof of the payment thereof.
The managers at each poll are au
thorized and required to appoint a
clerk who shall keep a poll list, which
shall contain a column headed “Name
of Voters,’* and the name of each
elector shall be entered by the clerk in
said column, and the said clerk shall,
Defore entering upon «his duties take
an oath and subscribe to the oath pro
vided for in section 30 of article 2 of
the conatitution, and the oath with
regard to duelling, before the Chair
man of the Board of Managers. And
such Chairman in each instance ia re
quired and empowered to administer
oaths.
The polls shall be opened at such
voting placet as shall be deaignatad, at
o'clock in the forenoon, and cloao
at 4 o'clock in the afternoon of the day
of election. The managers shall ad
minister to each person offering to
vote an oath that ho ia Qualified to
vote at this election, according to the
constitution of this State, and that ho
has not voted during this sloctiou
The voting shall bo by ballot, which

Mrs. Dors Dee .Walker, the Assist
ant State Home Demonstration agent
was in Barnwell County on August
9th and 10th. Thursday morning she
gave a public demonstration on grape
products at Blackville. Some of the
ladies came out to the meeting, but not
as many as we could have desired.
Tuesday afternoon the Pleasant Hill
club had a very successful monthly
meeting. Mrs. Walker gave her grape
demonstration there and the women
seemed much interested. 1 always en
joy meeting with this club, for the
people seem so responsive. I appre
ciate* very much the hearty coopera-,
tion of the people of this community.
