THURSDAY, AUGUST 16TH, 1917. Barnwell's Soldiers. On or about September 1st, one- third of Barnwell County 1 # first quo ta of 365 men for the new National Army will be called to the colors. In accordance with the regulations of the War Departfent they will mobilize at Barnwell, at which place they will entrain for the army camp. These young fellows are preparing to lay their all upon the altar of their coun try's honerr and as brave men and true they deserve some recognition at the hands of the people of the county. In a recent speech to the members of the Barnwell Red Cross Chapter, Dr. Joaiah Morse, of Columbia, suggested that it is within the scope of Reed Cross work to entertain soldiers while in the city en route to the training camps or their homes. Wouldn't it be a great thing for the people of the county, under the auspices of the Red Cross Chapter, to provide s barbecue dinner for the men on that day ? Seven Barnwell County men suc cessfully passed the examination at the officers* training camp at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., and have received their commissions. Among the num ber are James A. Willis, R. Boyd Cole and Harold A. Simms, of Barnwell, all of whom received commissions as cap tains, the former in the National Army and the two last named in the officers’ reserve corps. They are expected home this week. v Among the other aspirants for com missions from this county are: j James M. Riley, Allendale, to be first lieutenant, infantry section, offi cers' reserve corps. James W. Browning, Jr., of Black- ville, second lieutenant, infantry sec tion, officers’ reserve corps. Croft K. Sanders, of Blackville, sec ond lieutenant, quartermaster corps, National Army. Koger Marion Still, of Blackville, second lieutenant, officers’ reserve corps, regular army. The readers of this paper will also be interested to learn that David E. Barnett, of Laurens, who taught in the Barnwell High school last session, and Frank H. Barnwell, of Adams Run, who held a position with the Southern Bell Tel. 8 Tel. Mr. Brabham's wife, who was a Miss Bush, has been dead aome time. lust year Dr Brabham's daughter died and her death has weighed heavily upon him. Dr. Brab ham was s well beloved man and a gentleman of the old school. One son, L. D. Brabham of Batesburg, survives.
