CELEBRATES 85TH BIRTHDAY.

Sarah Williams, of Near Fair
fax, Reaches Ripe Old Age.
Fairfax, July 28.—Mrs. Susan Wil
liams celebrated her 85th birthday last
Friday at her home near town. There
were present on this happy occasion
thirty or more children and grand
children. Besides the children and
grandchildren living here, the follow
ing from a distance were present: Mr.
T. J. Deer, Misses Mamie Sue and
Blanch Deer, Heyward and Lewis
Deer from Sycamore; Mrs. Ben De-
Loach and family from near Hampton;
Mrs. Chisolm from Gifford, Mrs. Mid
dleton from Scotia and Mrs. Youmans
of Lena. An elegant dinner was
served and the occasion was a very
happy one. Mrs. Williams has many
friends who wish for her many more
happy birthdays.

The hot wave of the last few days
has had no bad effect on the growing
crops, which are the best this country

Home Demonstration Work.
Contractor Nicholls, who has been
in charge of the Main Street paving,
has practically completed the work

hear words other than the question to
be voted for, all muat be destroyed and

If more ballots shall be found on
opening the box than there are names
on the poll list, all the ballots shall be

Mr. J. W. Bowers has about com
pleted the new home of Mr. J. L. Box.
Mr. W. B. Rice is planning to erect
a nice residence on the Rice place.
Mr. Charlie Zeigler is visiting
friends at Bamberg.
Misses Vessie and Adelle Gray and
Mr. McGregor Brunson visited friends
at Jackson this week.
Mr. J. W. Bowers is expected to be
called to his regiment in Tennessee
soon.
The many friends of Mr. D. E. Rice
will be pleased to hear that he is im
proving. Mr. Rice has been in bed
since March, but it is hoped that he
will soon be out again.
The friends of Mrs. Wilder Gray
will learn with regret that she is quite
sick.

Notice is hereby * given that pur
suant to an act of the General Assem
bly of the State of South Carolina
approved on the first day of March,
A. D., 1917, an election will be held
in and for the County of Barnwell in
said State, on Tuesday, the 28th of
August, A. D., 1917, at which elec
tion the question of establishing a
county court for said county will be
submitted to the qualified electors of
said county. / t
No person shall be entitled to vote'
at said election unless it appears; (a)
That he has been duly registered, a
production of his registration
ficate will be sufficient proof as to his
having been registered.
(b). He must have paid his taxes
(including poll) collectible during the
previous year. The production of his
tax receipt from the officer authorized
to collect such taxes shall be conclus
ive proof of the payment thereof.
