la the most Important animal to
raise for meat and monify. He re
quires less labor, less equipment,
less capital, makes greater gains per
hundred pounds of concentrates and
reproduces himself faster and !n
greater numbers than any other do
mestic animal. As a consumer of
by-products the hog has no rival.
No other animal equals the lard hog
in its fat-storing tendency. , The
most satisfactory meat for ^hipping
long distances on train, boat $r
wagon, and for long storage after
reaching its destination is mess
pork. There is no anftnal which
produces more meat and meat prod
ucts than the hog.
Pork finds ready sale because
packers have discovered many ways
of placing pork on the market in at
tractive and highly palatable form
combined with most excellent keep
ing qualities. There is no other
meat from which so many products
are manufactured. Very near 50 per
cent, of the total value, in dollars
and cents, of the meat and meat
products slaughtered In the packing
bouses of the United States is de
rived from the hog. Our country
leads by far all countries in the
production as well as in the con
sumption of meat and meat predicts.

terials and especially in ammoni-
ntes. Tankage, cotton seed meal and
dried blood are already so high that

profitably used as fertilizing materi
als. This is because these materials
are more and more being used as
food for liye stock, being substitut
ed to some extent for corn, wheat
bran and other materials which can
be used for human food. Sulphate
of Ammonia, which has been largely
used lor fertilizers. Is almost entire
ly off the market, being required by jt
the government for the manufacture
pf munitions. It is altogether prob
able that next *pr« the average
fanner will be unable to buy any
source of ammonia excwpt nitrate ot
soda, which Is wow nearing 9100 per

Big ('hemicaj Tank Explodes in Chi-
cabo- Plant.
Three persona were burned to
death and four others seriously in
jured by fire in the plant of tfie In
terstate Sanitation company at Cin
cinnati late Tuesday., The fire was
caused by the explosion of a 250-
pound tank of chemicals, the shock
lurtially wrecking the building, tcip-
ping employees and ‘several families
living in the upper stories of the
building The df^ad were * all em
ployees of the company. They are:
