EXCEEDS ALLOTMENT.
Barnwell County Contributed Over
$5,000for Red Cross Fund.
The People of Barnwell County dis
played their patriotism during the
past week by contributing between $5,-
300 and $5,500 to the national Red
Cross fund of $100,000,000, exceeding
the county’s allotment of $5,000 by
several hundred dollars. The town of
Barnwell led with $1,700, Allendale,
Williston, Blackville and Fairfax fo-
lowing in the order named. Advices
from Washington state that the fund
like th^ Liberty Loan, was largely
ovtT 1 -subscribed by the people of the
United States, again demonstrating
to the world at large and to Germany
in particular that the American people
are in the war to win. i

able sum will all be put into circulation
in this country within a short time—
and the wheels of trade must hum! •

sum would pay for every acre of
land in the continental United States.
Imagine, if you can, seven billions
of dollars in dollar “greenbacks," end
to end—they will go round the earth
at the equater nearly 34 times! And
it would take an express train, run
ning continuously, for two and one-
half years, to cover the distance.
Seven billions of dollars will buy
two pairs of good shoes for every man,
woman and child on earth today—
Christiaa and pagan.
Had an express train started at
the dawn of the Christian era, going
at the rate of a mile a minute, it
would today, figuratively speaking,
hardly have gotten out of the train
sheds, for it would have gone only one
seventh of the distance. And would
now, 1917, have yet eleven thousand
four hundred years io complete the
journey of seven billion miles.
Count it—ridiculous! Imagine an
expert counter* of money counting
seven billion of dollars in dollar bills,
an expert enough to count one a
second— belonging to the “union,”
working eight bourn s day, Sundays
and holidays excluded, and then im
agine him working the job for 60
years, then turning over the work to
another—the first Brian who tackled
the job would have been dead 700
years when the fifteenth man quitting
