British were in full possession of their
new gain and in appreciably better po
sition than previously for a continua
tion of their offensive eastward to
ward Douai.
Holding to Arleux.
When dawn broke over the battle
field Sunday it found the Canadians
holding tenaciously to Arleux-en-Go-
helle, which they had captured Satur
day in a thrilling battle. Their night
had not been a restful one, for the
Germans threw a heavy counter at
tack against them that required hard
work to put down with rifle and ma
chine gun Are—a task which, how
ever, the Canadians successfully ac
complished and inflicted heavy casual
ties upon the Germans.
Berlin has admitted the loaa to the

other parts of Field Marshal Haig’s

that subject. And I have no doubt
that the presid^U himself, busy as he
is, would be interested if his mail in
cluded many letters from local editors,
suggesting that under his direction the

the purchasing agent fur the allies and
spend wisely and economically the
money that the allies are going to bor
row from us, instead "of handing that
money over to the allies and letting
them pay our trust gentlemen $4 in
American tax money for one dollar’s
worth of goods.

All of our wars have been declared
in April, except the war of 1812, which
started in June.
This is the seventh war of the United

It is nineteen years this month since
we declared war upon Spain.
This is the first war in which Amer
ica and England will fight on the same

War followed sixty-four days after
Germany’s note breaking her pledges
to the United States.

are now all at war.
