A certain man, who really should
have known better, expressed the
opinion while in Barnwell recently,
that people who read the daily papers
do not read the “little weeklies “ Our
opinion of that man's judgment im
mediately fell about 100 per cent.', for
it is a fact, admitted by national ad
vertisers and others in a position to
know, that the weekly / press of this
country exerts more influence than the
dailies, or any other one institution,
for that matter. Monday’s meeting
Was announced in the daily papers
only, but had it been arranged in time
for the county papers to have men
tioned it last week we say without fear
of contradiction that the attendance
would have been several times as
large, our friend (?) whose opinion
is quoted above to the contrary not
withstanding.
While the citizens of Barnwell are
“swatting the fly" by cleaning up
their premises, would it not be a good
idea for the city fathers to swat the
mosquito by having the ditches of the
town thoroughly cleaned out,- so that
no stagnant water will accumulate to
breed malaria carriers ?

increase in the price of foodstuffs will
have a correspondingly depressing
effect on the price of cotton. Hence,
if one refuses to grow foodstuffs for
patriotic reasons, he should he im
pressed with the fact that it is good
business judgment to <|o so. At pres
ent prices for products imported by
the farmers of this State, cotton is
cheap at 20 cents a pound, and any
material increase in the prices of im
ported articles will spell ruin to thous
ands of cotton planters if the fleecy
staple sells below that figure.
Then, too, there is the boll weevil to
be considered. It is agreed that this
is possibly the last full crop of cotton
, that will be made in this section of
the State. That being the case, it
would seem that this is a most excel
lent time to break away from the all
cotton system and adopt other meth
ods.

of Barnwell County will attend en
masse the meetings that have been ar
ranged throughout the county for to

by statute to be of full age for all pur

zens of the United States who can
comply with the requirements.

quirements of the examination can be
secured from the postmaster at the
place of vacancy or from the United

kind in the workings of the equip
ment, and to repair such troubles as soon 1
as possible after they occur.
Subscribers are asked to report trouble
immediately, and to exercise a. reasonable
patience while it is being cleared.
If you do not see a man actually
working on your telephone, it does not
mean that you are not receiving proper
attention.
The difficulty may be at the switch
board, in the cable or at any one of sev
eral other places. Two or three men may
be at work hunting it down.
