While we have no desire whatever
to pose ms an alarmist we believe that
the United States is threatened almost
as much by enemies within its borders
as it Ms by those in foreign lands. At
any rate, no harm will result from a
careful investigation of the acts of sus
pects. We all would have a very poor
opinion of an American who turned
traitor and took up arms against his
native land after a brief sojourn in a
foreign country; is k, therefore, un
reasonable to suppose that ^thousands
of Germans who have come to this
country in the past few years would
so soon have forgotten their loyalty
to the fatherland? Would it not be
more reasonable‘‘to assume that they
will do all in their power to advance
the cause of the Kaiser?
The People will not attempt the im
possible task of enumerating M those

out their present plans and put every
available acre in cotton. Our grain'
crops were practically destroyed by
the cold a few months ago. .
“It is understood that farmers are
determined to plant all this oat )and
wheat land in cotton. Every means
should be exerted to prevent this. The
big farmer and the little farmer
throughout the South ought -to be
shown that it is his patriotic duty to
grow sufficient food stuffs upon his
farm, not only to feed his owm family
and his owm stock, but to give some
assistance at least to the government
in taking care of the men in the army
and the navy. Let it not .be said that
in these critical times the South has
