The announcement by Germany last
week of the resumption of unrestrict
ed submarine warfare was like the pro
verbial thunderbolt from a clear sky
and hardly less surprising was Pres
ident Wilson's pfompt action in sever-*
ing diplomatic relations with a wart
mad nation. There is no one who real
izes more clearly than the President
the grave consequences that may at
tend such an act, but the patience
of the United States had been exhaus
ted and the dignity and honor of the
nation demanded the step that wafe
taken. *
The American people have no quar
rel with the German people, and if war
follows the severance of diplomatic
relations it will be a war forced upon
us by the Imperial German Govern
ment and Germany will learn to her
cost that while slow to anger the
United Statees will make a formidable
opponent. .
The people of the United States are
face to face with perhaps the great
est crisis in the history of the nation
and the future course of the republic
depends upon the developments of the
next few days—perhaps hours. While
we all hope that we will be spared ac
tual participation in the European
conflict, the country stands solidly be
hind the President.

We read an article the other day in
which the statement was made that
manufacturers have a hard time get
ting good comic scenarios. If they
could only stage some of the fool bills
introduced during a session of the
South Carolina Legislature the need
could be amply supplied.
About the best argument we know
against planting the whole country ip
cotton this year is the fact that the
price of the staple “went off" $26 a
bale last week. Just suppose that had
happened Ust Fall when marketing
was in full blast!
The announcement of C. L. Blease
# that he is a candidate-ior Governor in
1918 should put the Ahti-Bleaseites
on the alert. They cannot afford to
lose sight of the penalty they came sfr*
near paying by their over-cofidence in
1916.

Several Barnwell farmers are going
to try a new departure this year—the
growing of tobacco. It is said that the
soils in this ‘section are well adapted
to the production of an excellent qual
ity of light leaf tobacco.

The total amount of cotton of the
1916 crop ginned in Jasper County is
not as large as th6 increase in pro
duction in Barnwell County. Only
5,005 bales have been ginned prior to
January l3t.

Saved Girl’s life
“I want to tell you what wonderful behefit I have re- jr

Mrs. Sylvania Woods; of Clifton Mills, Ky. W
y It certainly has no equal for la grippe, bad colds, W
liver and stomach troubles. I firmly believe Black-Draught ^
saved my little girl’s life. When she had. the measles, ®
they went in on her, but one good dose of Thed^ord’s ®
Black-Draught made them break out, and she has had no
