JOHN W. HOLMES 1840-1912 B. P. DAVIES, Editor and Proprietor. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1st, 1917. The poaition taken by the Hon. Thos. G. McLeod, former Lieutenant Governor, in regard to the use of the public roads by two-wheeled timber carts is sound and should be acted on by the Legislature. It ia a well known fact that one of the carts will do more damage to a sand-clay road in one* month than will result from ordinary use in a year, and Mr.^Mc- Leod suggests that the owners of saw mills be required to use a four wheeled vehicles and that they also be re quired to give bond to “leave the roads in the same condition in which they found them, ordinary wear and tear excepted.” He points out that frequently it is necessary to expend $260 more per mile on a sand-clay road costing originally from $600 to $1,000 per mile after one season’s op eration of a log cart. The People hopes that the General Assembly will pass some such needed legislation along this line, y Well, let’s have straight-out pro hibition or do away with the present law. The Webb-Kenyon Act can make absolute prohibition a reality and leaves no valid excuse for com promising. Now that the Legislature has passed an act to provide travelling ex penses for Circuit Judges, we hope they will amend it by including edi tors. Special to The People. Allendale, R. F. D. No. 1, January 27.—This community was saddened on Sunday, the 14th inst., when the death angel entered the home of Mr. W. C. Gray and claimed one of the county’s best citizens. It is sad to see any one die, but the loss is so much heavier when the deceased has been usful and helpful to the community. None Mnew this fine man but to love him. The writer has been closely associated N^ith him for a number of years and can say without fear of contradiction that W. C. Gray came as near being an up-right, high-toned, honorable gentleman as the county has ever produced. In fact, one was ele vated by the acquaintance of such a man. In all of our associations with him we have never heard him speak anything but the best for his neigh bor and fellowman. He was a true citizen, ready at all times to assist those that needed help; a most devot ed husband and father, ready to give up all pleasures for his loved ones; a man true to his church and his soci§- ty In evel*y Way. Mr. Gray was considered one of the most intelligent farmers of Bull Pond Township and got value received for every dollar invested in his farm. His health began to fail more than a year ago, but he bravely fought on until just a few days before he died; when he was compelled to take to his bed. Everything that medical skill could do was donre, hut to* no avail, and just as the day began to dawn on Sunday he breathed his last. The funeral services were conduct ed by his pastor, the Rev. Mr. Cullom, at Symira Church, of which he was a membeer, and the body was laid to rest with Masonic honors. The writer sincerely deplores the death of Mr. Gray, realizing that we have lost a friend whose aspirations were high and lofty, and we will deep ly feel his absence from our communi ty. To his loved ones we can only ask God to he merciful to them in their sore and sad affliction. Mr. Gray was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Gray, of Hampton County, by whom he is survived, to gether with three ^brothers, four sis- ters, a devoted wife and five children. All is dark wuthin their home, Lonely are their hearts today, For the one they loved so dearly Has forever passed away. Sleep dear friend; take your rest; God called you home—He thought it best. fhrough all his pain at times he would smile And speak a word of cheer, And when the angel called him home He bid farewell without fear. We left him in his silent grave alone, The one whom we shall never cease to mourn. J. LAWTON BOX. The Standard Railroad of the South. for all trains from f FEB. 12 to 19, Inclusive. .
